The vegetal model
This article examines Buffon's general theory of reproduction, concentrating on his discussion of the similarities and differences between animals and plants and his explanation of nourishment, development and reproduction as effects of the same general cause. In the 'First Discourse' and various of the chapters of Volume II of Buffon's Natural History he seems to affirm two contradictory claims concerning the distinction between animals and plan…
What is critical history of philosophy
In the past half‐century critical historiographies of philosophy have challenged the exclusionist Eurocentric and masculinist presumptions of “history of philosophy,” and we have witnessed the multiplication of philosophical worlds in the relation of indigenous to Western scholarship and in critical philosophical anthropologies. Does this mean that there is, or can be, no unity to the history of philosophy? In this article, I argue that these cha…
From Aristotle to Contemporary Biological Classification
This paper examines the nature of the categories of ‘male’ and ‘female’ as classificatory groupings, via an examination of this question in Aristotle’s zoology and metaphysics. Tracing the use of Aristotle’s logical categories of ‘genus’ and ‘species’ in his zoological works and contrasting this with the use of the terms in contemporary taxonomy, the paper demonstrates that ‘male’ and ‘female’ are, in a significant sense, unclassifiable. Although…
Race and Sex in Western Philosophy
This article critically extends Kant's 1786 discussion of “orientation in thinking” to ask what it means to “orient oneself in thinking” around the concepts of race and sex, addressed in the context of 1) the central place and historical importance of Kant in Western philosophy; and 2) Kant's theory of race and its relation to his critical philosophy. As presumptions about race and sex are already built into the history of philosophy, taking thes…
Kant, race, and natural history
This article presents a new argument concerning the relation between Kant’s theory of race and aspects of the critical philosophy. It argues that Kant’s treatment of the problem of the systematic unity of nature and knowledge in the Critique of Pure Reason and the Critique of the Power of Judgment can be traced back a methodological problem in the natural history of the period – that of the possibility of a natural system of nature. Kant’s transf…
Freud, Bion and Kant
This interdisciplinary article takes a philosophical approach to The Interpretation of Dreams, connecting Freud to one of the few philosophers with whom he sometimes identified - Immanuel Kant. It aims to show that Freud's theory of dreams has more in common with Bion's later thoughts on dreaming than is usually recognized. Distinguishing, via a discussion of Kant, between the conflicting 'epistemological' and 'anthropological' aspects of The Int…
Kant's Organicism
Kant's place in the history of the invention of the concept of race will be well known to readers of Critical Philosophy of Race. Kant developed his concept of race in a number of articles, in 1775, 1785 and 1788; the first edition of his Critique of Pure Reason was published in 1781, the second in 1789. That some of the terms of the critical philosophy were deployed in the development of the concept of race is now also well known. But even among…
Contradiction of Terms
This article addresses the question of the relation between disciplines and transdisciplinary practices and concepts through a discussion of the relationship between philosophy and the emblematically transdisciplinary practice of feminist theory, via a discussion of interdisciplinarity and related terms in gender studies. It argues that the tendency of philosophy to reject feminist theory, as alien to it as a discipline, is in a sense correct, to…
The Dialectic of The Dialectic of Sex
Late in 2006 I chanced across a copy of The Dialectic of Sex in the £1.00 bargain bin of my local second-hand bookshop in North London. I was pregnant; third trimester. Perhaps this influenced my decision to buy it. Like many other students of the history of feminism (my formal feminist education began in the late 1980s) all I knew of Firestone was that she argued for the abolition of biological reproduction, as the necessary condition for freein…
Further Adventures of the Dialectic of Sex
In these eleven essays scholars from diverse disciplines address the argument, reception, and implications of The Dialectic of Sex and make a compelling, critical case for its contemporary salience

Plato and Levinas
