  • Academic Output in China on the Sino‐Latin American Relationship (2013–2025): Current Status and Evolution of Perspectives

Open Access•Antonio José Pagán Sánchez•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2026

Despite the growing importance of China–Latin America relations, academic perspectives from China on this topic remain understudied. This manuscript addresses that gap by analysing the 213 articles on the subject retrieved from CNKI through two subject searches covering the period 2013–2025. The findings reveal several key patterns. First, much of the literature is closely linked to China's Party‐State institutions. Second, the economic and polit…

  • Between distrust and strategic opportunity: Chinese scholars discuss the U.S. impact in Sino-Latin American relations

Open Access•Antonio José Pagán Sánchez•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Política…•2025

This study examines how academic publications in China have interpreted the U.S. impact on Sino-Latin American relations between 2009 and 2024. This period encompasses three different U.S. presidents: Barack Obama, Donald Trump (first presidency), and Joe Biden. The findings indicate that, strikingly, distrust toward the U.S. was already present well before U.S.-China tensions erupted during Trump’s presidency, and that publications consulted per…

  • The rise of China and the US-Europe alliance drift in the 2010s: A lost decade for the European Union

Open Access•Antonio José Pagán Sánchez•ARTICLE•Cuadernos Europeos de Deusto•2022

The United States and its allies within the European Union have been unable to forge a common response to deal with the rise of China. Even though China’s growing global presence might undermine the international position of the United States, Washington’s European allies have sometimes refused to close ranks with their American ally. And more importantly, European engagement with China during the last decade has lacked internal consistency and c…

Su obra La Actualidad de China. • The rise of China under the lenses of Social and Political Sciences: Four decades challenging widespread assumptions

    Open Access•Antonio José Pagán Sánchez•ARTICLE•Sociología Histórica•2022

Since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policies by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, China has undergone a series of rapid changes that have turned it into a great power with prospects for global leadership. Its rise has not only opened up the possibility that, for the first time in the last two centuries, a non-Western country could once again rise to the top of the international order. The changes in China over the past four decades have al…

In 2020, humanity witnessed with perplexity the expansion of the largest pandemic outbreak in the last century. The coronavirus crisis would have tragic effects on society and healthcare throughout the world, but its consequences go far beyond these two areas. In the field of international relations, the pandemic has impacted the balance of power between the United States and China, whose relationship was already facing rising tensions. While the…
