Urban violence and psycho-social suffering in Brazil: A clinical-political discussion of the concept of collective trauma
This article presents a clinical-political approach to collective trauma, based on authors who offer an intersubjective reading of psychoanalysis in dialogue with feminist theorists, responsible for the political interpretation of trauma. This material engages with accounts of victims’ experiences of urban violence in Brazil. Collective trauma is seen as a disruptive event, for which there are no representational resources. Among its effects are …

Introduction to Special Issue on Academic Freedom: Reclaiming paths to individual and collective sovereignty
Academic freedom: Challenges to cultivating a revolutionary unconscious in a neoliberal world
Seeking to frame the debate around academic freedom in terms of freedom of thought, this article begins with an exploration of the hazards of fascist ideology and the psychodynamics of persuadability. Attention is paid to the perverse lure of certainty and the apparent willingness of many people to accede to an instrumentalized unconscious. Through the writings of Butler and Athanasiou, an antithesis to the dispossession of an instrumentalized un…
Meeting migrants: Mourning, possibility and generativity
A description of partnership between a school of psychology and a human rights organization that offers asylum services is used as a basis for probing the ethical complexity of activism. “Doing good” is complicated by the insertion of asylum evaluation services into the reductionist and metrics‐based evaluative mechanisms utilized in conventional psychological services and demanded by U.S. and European immigration proceedings. Conceptualization o…
Troubling childhood: A conversation
The authors explore their interest in child precarity. The discussion begins with autobiographical explorations of events in their lives that have led them to have sensitivity to childhood vulnerability and then moves on to a discussion of their key concerns about childhood today. Discussion includes mention of significant writers that have influenced their thinking
Creating a school‐based mental health program to meet the needs of children in underserved communities and schools: The Derner Hempstead Child Clinic
There is an increasing tendency in the field to develop partnerships between schools and mental health (MH) clinics to address the MH needs of children in schools. Such initiatives are particularly important in providing services to children who attend underfunded and understaffed schools in underserved communities. These initiatives face several challenges that can interfere with the delivery of services. The present paper presents the challenge…

Whiteness and the Psychoanalytic Imagination
In this essay I seek to interrogate the specialized language of psychoanalysis and the implicit role unexamined racialization—and hence White hegemony—play in the American psychoanalytic imagination. I begin with a discussion of Eng & Han writing on racial melancholia, a work that offers a thoughtful exposition of the power of Whiteness to induce racial melancholia in its “Others.” I then turn the inquiry toward my own life story, seeking to illu…

Engaging Teachers in Emancipatory Knowledge Construction
It is misleading to speak of constructivism as a homogeneous ideology. Some forms of constructivism, such as those underlying critical, poststructuralist, and feminist theory, are emancipatory in intent. The Piagetian forms of constructivism that are gaining popularity as an alternative to traditional didactic education cannot be the basis for radical educational change. The author describes principles of an emancipatory approach to knowledge con…
