  • Gelada (Theropithecus gelada) genomic diversity sheds light on the biogeography of an endemic species of the Ethiopian highlands

Open Access•Giacomo Mercuri, Matteo Caldon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026•References: 64

Genomic data are increasingly used in primatology to understand how landscape features, dispersal patterns, and historical processes shape population structure and conservation-relevant diversity. The gelada ( Theropithecus gelada ), an endemic primate of the Ethiopian highlands, is currently divided into three subspecies; yet little is known about the extent of genomic variation within these groups. This gap is most pronounced for the Central ge…

  • Genetic diversity within and among gelada (Theropithecus gelada) populations based on mitochondrial DNA analysis

    Open Access•Takayoshi Shotake, Weerachai Saijuntha et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 5

We studied genetic characteristics within and among gelada (Theropithecus gelada) populations inhabiting the southern and northern plateaus of Ethiopia. Twenty-one mtDNA haplotypes were identified. Geladas on the southern plateau were genetically separated from those on the northern plateau, with a large differentiation as indicated by Fst values of 0.665–0.917. The difference between the subspecies (T. g. gelada and T. g. obscurus) on the northe…

  • Variation of the melanocortin 1 receptor gene in the macaques

Open Access•Kazuhiro Nakayama, Takayoshi Shotake et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2008

Melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), a G‐coupled seven‐transmembrane receptor protein, plays a key role in the regulation of melanin synthesis in mammals. Sequence variation of the MC1R gene ( MC1R ) has been associated with pigmentation phenotypes in humans and in several animal species. The macaques (genus Macaca ) are known to show a marked inter‐specific variation in coat color although the causative genetic variation remains unclear. We investiga…

Open Access•Goichi ISHIMOTO, Mieko KUWATA et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1975

A variant hemoglobin was found initially in the Ihama troop at the Izu Peninsula, after examined more than 1000 samples of Macaca fuscata. The variant hemoglobin showed a slower migrating mobility than the normal hemoglobin in starch gels at alkaline pH, when released from the red cells, and possessed an unusual property that formed molecular aggregates, like Hb-Pmi of Macaca irus, but differed from that in several respects. The aggregated forms o…

A total of 1704 macaques were screened for electrophoretic variants of NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase and six phenotypes of the enzyme were found in the blood samples from various populations of nine macaque species.M.mulatta from China was disclosed to be most polymorphic, with three postulated alleles resulting in six phenotypes.M.cyclopis and M.irus (except the philippine group) had two alleles with three phenotypes and the remaining …
