  • Figures of speech as a linguistic marker of post-traumatic stress disorder

Open Access•Robin Quillivic, Frédérique Gayraud et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2025

This study investigates the use of figures of speech by individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental health condition subsequent to a traumatic event. A large body of literature has addressed the issue of trauma-related metaphors, but other figures of speech have not been investigated. Our goal is to analyze these figures of speech in relation to PTSD and to assess the extent to which such linguistic markers can contribute to …

  • Development of phonetic complexity in Arabic, Berber, English and French

Open Access•Frédérique Gayraud, Melissa Barkat-Defradas et al.•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2018

The goal of this study is to provide crosslinguistic data on the acquisition of phonetic complexity among children acquiring four different languages: Tunisian Arabic, Tashlhiyt Berber, English, and French. Using an adaptation of Jakielski's (2000) Index of Phonetic Complexity (IPC), we carried out an analysis to assess phonetic complexity of children's early vocabulary in the four languages. Four different samples from each language were analyze…

  • Differences between girls and boys in emerging language skills

Open Access•Mårten Eriksson, Peter B Marschik et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Developmental…•2012

The present study explored gender differences in emerging language skills in 13,783 European children from 10 non‐English language communities. It was based on a synthesis of published data assessed with adapted versions of the MacArthur‐Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs) from age 0.08 to 2.06. The results showed that girls are slightly ahead of boys in early communicative gestures, in productive vocabulary, and in combining words…

  • Does Structural Complexity Necessarily Imply Processing Difficulty

    Open Access•Frédérique Gayraud, Bruno Martinie•ARTICLE•Journal of Psycholinguistic…•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 18

  • Influence of preterm birth on early lexical and grammatical acquisition

    Open Access•Frédérique Gayraud, Sophie Kern•ARTICLE•First Language•2007

This study compares early grammatical and lexical acquisition in 323 preterm and 166 full-term children at 24 months. The French MacArthur-Bates parental report was employed for analysis. Gestational age and birth order showed a significant effect on vocabulary size and grammatical distribution. Preterm children showed fewer words and produced more games, routines and animal noises words. Except for the group of extremely premature children, firs…
