The structural antecedents of conflict in voluntary sport organizations
Conflict is endemic to all organizations. However, in this paper it is argued that voluntary sport and leisure organizations exhibit characteristics that render them significantly more susceptible to conflict than organizations in other institutional spheres. Using a case analysis, this paper examines the impact that the introduction of a rational planning program had on a Canadian national sport organization. It is argued that contrary to popularly held beliefs planning is as much a political activity as it is a technical activity and its political nature can heighten conflict in an organization.
