  • In Praise of Misreading (On Contingency and Creativity)

    D N Rodowick•ARTICLE•Minnesota Review•2023

This article argues in favor of misreading as a creative act. There is something involuntary in every creative act, and this involuntariness is itself a force of creation that arrives at the threshold of every act of repetition in and through time. Creativity is always shaped by unexpected encounters with ideas, arguments, and artworks. My defense of misreading as a creative act, however, asks for a broader description of contingency that include…

  • Angelica Mesiti's World Citizens

    D N Rodowick•ARTICLE•October•2021

In this essay, I review a 2019 exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo entitled When Saying Is Doing, which featured work by Angelica Mesiti, a contemporary Australian artist who works on questions of performance, immigration, and non-verbal communication in multi-screen moving image installations. On the contemporary global stage, if we do not share the same linguistic community or communities, how is human interrelatedness expressed through other for…

  • An Elegy for Theory

    D N Rodowick•ARTICLE•October•2007•Cited by: 3

Rhetorically charged debates over have divided scholars of the humanities for decades. In Elegy for Theory, D. N. Rodowick steps back from well-rehearsed arguments pro and con to assess why has become such a deeply contested concept. Far from lobbying for a return to the high theory of the 1970s and 1980s, he calls for a vigorous dialogue on what should constitute a new, ethically inflected philosophy of the humanities.Rodowick develops an ambiti…

  • Gilles Deleuze's Time Machine

    Darlene Pursley, D N Rodowick•ARTICLE•SubStance•2000

Most readers of Gilles Deleuze's two volumes on the cinema initially find themselves confronted with a sense of vertigo as they follow Deleuze simultaneously traversing the fields of philosophy and film studies in an exploration of movement and time. Interestingly, those who identify strongly with the disciplines of philosophy or film studies seem the most hesitant to give serious thought to Deleuze's philosophical engagement of the cinema. It has been suggested that the interdisciplinary project of is no longer organized on the model of (as were the disciplines of art history, architectural history, film history, etc.) but on the model of anthropology.
