  • Some Considerations on the Theory of Emanation in Alfarabi, Avicenna, and al-Ghazālī

    Catarina Belo•ARTICLE•Theology and Science•2025

This chapter, inspired by Edward Moad's analysis of al-Ghazālī's approach to the theory of emanation, offers a comparative analysis of that theory, according to Alfarabi and Avicenna, and assesses al-Ghazālī's response. Al-Ghazālī holds that emanation constitutes a major obstacle to a correct conception of God as portrayed in the Qurʾan. More specifically, it is incompatible with a correct understanding of God's attributes, in particular God's kn…

Es mi propósito presentar el argumento de Ibn Rušhd que contiene inequívocas alusiones aristotélicas; por tanto, la armonización de la religión y la filosofía implícita en sus argumentos es uno de los…

  • Averroes on God's Knowledge of Particulars

    Catarina Belo•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•2006•Cited by: 1

This article discusses a central issue in the debate between philosophy and theology in the Islamic Middle Ages. In his attempt to show that Greek philosophy was contrary to Islam, theologian al-Ghazzālī charged Muslim philosophers with unbelief (kufr) on three counts: the eternity of the world, bodily resurrection and God's knowledge of particulars. The latter was particularly significant within an Islamic context. If God does not know particula…
