  • Playing the Field

    Open Access•Kathleen J Lehman, Kaitlyn N Stormes et al.•ARTICLE•Innovative Higher Education•2026

Decades of research suggests that internship participation in college supports students’ career development and transition into post-college careers. Given the gender and racial/ethnic equity gaps in the STEM workforce, especially in the subfield of computing and technology, increasing the number of students who participate in computing-related internships during college may be one way to promote broader participation in these fields. Yet, few st…

  • Shaping Possible Selves

    Open Access•Jue Wu, Kathleen N Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•2026•References: 50

Although internships are common, few studies examine how these applied experiences shape undergraduate students’ self-concept, especially for minoritized groups such as women in computing. Using a possible selves framework and qualitative data collected before, during, and after women's computing internships, this study illustrates how participants constructed and updated concepts of their ought, feared, and ideal selves. Specifically, findings s…

  • “I Found My Home There”

Annie M Wofford, Kathleen N Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Student Affairs…•2024

Motivated by ongoing gender disparities in engineering, the authors qualitatively examine how collegiate STEM student organizations serve as affirming spaces for women’s engineering identity development, countering their exclusionary classroom environments. Drawing from interviews and written data with 24 undergraduate women, findings demonstrate how student organizations promote engineering identity through women recognizing themselves as engine…

  • Breaking the Stained-Glass Ceiling

Nicole Giglia, Kathleen N Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Women and Gender in…•2024•References: 11

This interpretive phenomenological study features the leadership experience of 16 current and former women college presidents of U.S. Roman Catholic colleges and universities. With Catholic organizations barring women from top leadership roles within the Church, the term "stained-glass ceiling" describes the unique leadership barriers that women face in Catholic higher education. Using Acker's theory of gendered organizations as a framework, anal…

  • Expression & Environment

    Kathleen N Smith, Matthew A Starcke•ARTICLE•Journal of Student Affairs…•2023

This study examines campus graffiti within a designated space at a large, public university over a 30-day period. Using photographic data, we used content analysis to track graffiti themes and duration, finding artifacts ranging from prosocial to hostile to abstract. While topics such as race, gender, and politics comprised a small proportion of artifacts, we expect that these graffiti are most impactful to either promoting or inhibiting a safe a…

  • When Debt Deters

    Open Access•Kathleen N Smith, Hind F Albana•ARTICLE•Journal of Career Development•2023

Education-job match is often associated with enhanced well-being and career satisfaction, although existing research suggests that arts college graduates are less likely to experience education-job match than graduates of other disciplines. As research also increasingly suggests that student loan debt may influence college graduates’ access to lower-paying industries and careers, this study uses a cross-sectional dataset from the Strategic Nation…

  • “No Girls on the Software Team”

    Open Access•Julia C Lapan, Kathleen N Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Career Development•2023

Despite computer science (CS) students’ widespread participation in internships, few studies have examined how internship experiences impact career decision-making. Because women are severely underrepresented within CS, understanding how internship experiences impact career decision-making can provide critical insight into women’s career development processes and longevity in the field. Using the concept of career self-management within social co…

The teaching profession is facing difficulty recruiting and retaining talent in the U.S., especially in STEM subjects. This study identifies the key experiences that shaped the academic paths and career plans of 10 pre-service teachers in STEM education who are participating in a loan forgiveness programme in North Carolina. Using life history methodology, category-centred analysis based on social cognitive career theory revealed six themes. Find…

    Open Access•Monnica Chan, Jihye Kwon et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Recent trends in higher education financing have increased students’ need to borrow to afford college. This brief examines how federal student loan borrowing has changed from 2000 to 2016 by student race/ethnicity using logistic regression analysis and data from the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS). We find that the odds of borrowing have diverged over time across racial and ethnic subgroups even after controlling for institutiona…

Women in engineering continue to experience bias in the field. This constructivist case study uses feminist theory to examine the gendered experiences of graduating senior women engineering students in academic and workplace environments. In each setting we identified three subthemes; in academia: "I don't think my education is any different," "Being underestimated constantly," and "You don't want to be seen as getting advantages"; in the workpla…

In this article, we examine responses to the March on Washington from the vantage point of Durham University, Durham, UK. As members of a course titled ‘Feminist Geographies of Intimacy’, we viewed the March on Washington as a prudent and timely event with which to think ‘on’ and ‘with’ intimacy and also to consider on a more personal level the significance of the March to our own feminism/s, feminist geographies and everyday lives. This piece is…
