  • Mother Tongue

    Open Access•Juliana Saldarriaga•ARTICLE•Ethnographic Praxis in Industry…•2024•References: 5

This work demonstrates how and why the expertise of non-medical actors, such as patients, caregivers, and patient advocacy groups, is essential for improving patient outcomes and quality of life. 'Vernacular' knowledge, including community beliefs, values, networks, and practices, both challenge and collaborate with institutional scientific knowledge. The value of this interaction of multiple kinds of knowledge is illuminated through a study of s…

  • Towards a Framework for Constructive Friction Processes

Open Access•Juliana Saldarriaga, Ana Inés Osorio et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnographic Praxis in Industry…•2023•References: 10

This paper proposes a simple framework to understand constructive friction processes. In the framework, constructive friction is understood as a symmetrical integration between different bodies of knowledge and practice, and has three manifestations: integration occurring within actors, between actors, and at an institutional level. To explain this framework, we apply it to a recent study on childbirth practices in Latin America, specifically the…

  • The Giving Caregivers

    Open Access•Juliana Saldarriaga•ARTICLE•Ethnographic Praxis in Industry…•2022•References: 14

In this paper we challenge an assumption about caregivers of chronic patients that we've repeatedly encountered in our ethnographic fieldwork: that of the inherently and permanently resilient caregiver, or a person that, driven by feelings of affection for the chronic patient, will remain strong regardless of the challenges posed by the healthcare system or the disease itself. We describe three deeply rooted beliefs that explain why this assumpti…

  • The Transformative Power of Singular Stories

Open Access•Juliana Cardona, Juliana Saldarriaga et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnographic Praxis in Industry…•2018•References: 2

In this case study we describe how we collaborated with a Colombian healthcare provider company and enabled its decision makers to understand the power of stories and other types of qualitative evidence in healthcare contexts. The stories became a tool for recognizing singularities in a complex, massive system, where individuals were constantly reduced to social security numbers. We describe the qualitative methods implemented, such as in-depth i…
