Heat exhaustion, domestic heat exposure and socioeconomic disparities among older adults
Participation behaviour of different migrant groups in breast cancer screening – palpation of the breast and mammography. Results from the German national cohort (Nako)
In contrast to earlier studies, our findings suggest that MSP participation and motivation does not significantly differ by migration status or language skills. This may indicate that information on MSP is broadly accessible through established invitation procedures in Germany. However, lower uptake of breast palpation by a physician in some migrant populations highlights potential gaps in broader preventive care engagement
Frailty among older adults in Germany
BACKGROUND: Frailty is a geriatric syndrome associated with increased morbidity, disability, and mortality. While its prevalence has been studied extensively in individual cohorts and patient populations, national prevalence data are scarce and regional variations within Germany remain largely unexplored. This study examined the frequency of frailty and its regional variation across the 18 NAKO (German National Cohort) study centers using a unifo…
Care delay during the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany – a cross-sectional online survey in the Nako study
During the COVID-19 pandemic, non-COVID-19 related healthcare utilization declined in Germany, resulting in care delay, including delays and cancellations of routine, chronic, and even acute care. The aim of this study was to investigate factors (i.e. regional differences and participant characteristics) associated with care delay during the pandemic in Germany using a cross-sectional survey. In October 2022, a total of 117,466 participants from …
Depression and anxiety symptoms in internally migrated women and men after the German unification
Subgroup analyses revealed group differences to depend on sex, but show negligible effect sizes, with internal migration only explaining less than 0.2 % of the variance for depression and anxiety symptoms. Internal migration alone is thus no substantial factor in explaining mental health differences. Future studies should use longitudinal data to determine temporal associations between internal migration and mental health
Artificial Intelligence in Medical Care – Patients' Perceptions on Caregiving Relationships and Ethics
INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) offers several opportunities to enhance medical care, but practical application is limited. Consideration of patient needs is essential for the successful implementation of AI-based systems. Few studies have explored patients' perceptions, especially in Germany, resulting in insufficient exploration of perspectives of outpatients, older patients and patients with chronic diseases. We aimed to explore how…
What can we learn from an intersectionality-informed description of study participants? Results from the German National Cohort
Our results showed that heterogeneity within social categories can be revealed by applying the concept of intersectionality when comparing study participants with an external population. This way, an intersectionality-informed approach contributes to describing social complexity among study participants more precisely. Furthermore, results can be used to reduce participation barriers in a more targeted way
Depressive symptoms, education, gender and history of migration - an intersectional analysis using data from the German National Cohort (Nako)
We observed a robust educational gradient in depressive symptoms, but gender and history of migration had substantial contribution on the magnitude of educational inequalities. An intersectional perspective on inequalities in depressive symptoms enhances current knowledge by showing that different social dimensions may intersect and contribute to inequalities in depressive symptoms. Future studies on inequalities in depression may greatly benefit…
From cigarettes to symptoms
Our findings support an association between smoking and depression. Robust dose-response relationships were found, with higher cigarette consumption associated with more severe depressive symptoms, and longer time since cessation linked to lower depression levels. These results highlight smoking as a meaningful and modifiable contributor to current and lifetime depression, suggesting that quitting smoking or reducing cigarette consumption may ben…
Childhood maltreatment and adult diseases in the general population
Childhood maltreatment is associated with an unhealthier lifestyle in adulthood and an increased risk of mental and somatic health problems, although the underlying pathways remain unclear. This study examined whether smoking and overweight mediate the association between childhood abuse/neglect and frequent adult diseases, including cancer, myocardial infarction, stroke, type 2 diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression, and anx…

Mental health of individuals with pre-existing mental illnesses at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a range of studies on mental health, with mixed results. While numerous studies reported worsened conditions in individuals with pre-existing mental disorders, others showed resilience and stability in mental health. However, longitudinal data focusing on the German population are sparse, especially regarding effects of age and pre-existing mental disorders during the early stages of the pandemic. Object…
Addressing psychosocial needs in patients with Long-Covid (PsyLoCo-Study)
The pilot trial has been registered with the German Clinical Trials Register (Deutsches Register Klinischer Studien; Trial-ID: DRKS00030866; URL: https://drks.de/search/de/trial/DRKS00030866) on March 7, 2023
The association between the child’s age and mothers’ physical activity
The results show differences in mothers' self-reported physical activity by the age of the youngest child. The strongest difference was related to physical activity in work settings, indicating the need for supportive actions
Climate-sensitive health counselling in Germany
Almost half of the participants in this sample would like to receive CSHC, especially those who are younger, more alarmed about CC and more politically oriented to the left. More research and training on patient-centred implementation of CSHC is needed
Changes in physical activity and sedentary behavior during the first Covid-19 pandemic- restrictions in Germany
Mobility patterns shifted towards inactivity or low-intensity activities during the nationwide restrictions in the spring of 2020, potentially leading to considerable and lasting health risks
Anxiety, depressive symptoms, and distress over the course of the war in Ukraine in three federal states in Germany
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is accompanied by continuing impairment of mental health in the German population. Fears surrounding the personal financial situation are a strong determinant
Efficacy of Three Numerical Presentation Formats on Lay People’s Comprehension and Risk Perception of Fact Boxes—A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study
(1) Background: Fact boxes present the benefits and harms of medical interventions in the form of tables. Some studies suggest that people with a lower level of education could profit more from graphic presentations. The objective of the study was to compare three different formats in fact boxes with regard to verbatim and gist knowledge in general and according to the educational background. (2) Methods: In May 2020, recruitment started for this…
Public information needs and preferences on Covid-19
There are extensive information needs regarding various aspects on COVID-19 among the general population. In addition, target-specific dissemination strategies are still needed to reach different groups
Cold Ischemia Time and Graft Fibrosis Are Associated with Autoantibodies after Pediatric Liver Transplantation
The reported prevalence of autoantibodies (AAB) (ANA, SMA, LKM, SLA) after pediatric liver transplantation (pLTX) varies considerably from 26-75%, but their clinical impact on outcome is uncertain. We aimed to study the prevalence of AAB after pLTX, their association with donor-, transplant-, and recipient-characteristics, and their relation to outcome. In our multicenter retrospective study, we aimed to clarify conflicting results from earlier s…
Birth Order, Caesarean Section, or Daycare Attendance in Relation to Child- and Adult-Onset Type 1 Diabetes
(1) Background: Global incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) is rising and nearly half occurred in adults. However, it is unclear if certain early-life childhood T1D risk factors were also associated with adult-onset T1D. This study aimed to assess associations between birth order, delivery mode or daycare attendance and type 1 diabetes (T1D) risk in a population-based cohort and whether these were similar for childhood- and adult-onset T1D (cut-off…
Providing laypeople with results from dynamic infectious disease modelling studies affects their allocation preference for scarce medical resources—a factorial experiment
Providing information on the expected population-level effects from dynamic infectious disease modelling studies resulted in a substantially different choice of allocation schemes. This finding supports the importance of incorporating model-based information in decision-making processes and communication strategies
Worsened Financial Situation During the Covid-19 Pandemic Was Associated With Depressive Symptomatology Among University Students in Germany
Background: Previous findings suggest that university students are at an elevated risk to experience financial hardship and to suffer from depressive symptoms. This vulnerability may have substantially increased during the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic which might have affected students' socio-economic situation but possibly also their mental well-being. We examined whether the financial situation changed during the COVID-19 pandemic…
Association between Parenthood and Health Behaviour in Later Life—Results from the Population-Based Carla Study
Previous research has focused on comparing health behaviour between parents and non-parents at younger ages, while little is known about the impact of being a parent on health behaviours in later life. We studied whether parenthood is associated with later physical activity (PA), dietary pattern, smoking status and alcohol consumption in German adults of middle and old age. We used data from the baseline examination of the population-based CARLA-…

HRQOL is strongly reduced in diabetic patients living in refugee camps in the Gaza strip. Women and older patients are especially affected
Correlates of depressive symptoms among Latino and Non-Latino White adolescents
Our findings suggest that the differences in depressive symptoms between Non-Latino Whites and Latino adolescents disappear at least in some strata after adjusting for socio-demographic and social support variables
Collecting social contact data in the context of disease transmission
Social Contacts and Mixing Patterns Relevant to the Spread of Infectious Diseases
BACKGROUND: Mathematical modelling of infectious diseases transmitted by the respiratory or close-contact route (e.g., pandemic influenza) is increasingly being used to determine the impact of possible interventions. Although mixing patterns are known to be crucial determinants for model outcome, researchers often rely on a priori contact assumptions with little or no empirical basis. We conducted a population-based prospective survey of mixing p…
Factors associated with self-rated health status in university students
The results suggest that SRHS can be reasonably used to compare students' health across countries. SRHS is affected by different physical, psychological and psychosomatic aspects of health; however, its strongest association is with psychosomatic complaints
Relationship between perceived body weight and body mass index based on self- reported height and weight among university students
Weight ideals are rather uniform across the European countries, with female students being more likely to perceive themselves as "too fat" at a normal BMI, while male students being more likely to perceive themselves as "too thin". Programs to prevent unhealthy behaviours to achieve ill-advised weight ideals may benefit students
Selected sociodemographic factors and related differences in patterns of alcohol use among university students in Slovakia
Our findings for the university students from Slovakia are in line with previous studies in Western Europe. Additionally, it appears that frequent alcohol use, excessive alcohol use (heavy episodic drinking and drunkenness) and problem drinking among university students represent a continuum and are influenced by the same sociodemographic factors
Ethnic differences in perceptions of body satisfaction and body appearance among U.S. Schoolchildren
There were substantial differences in body satisfaction and perceived appearance across the three largest ethnic groups of school-age children in the U.S. Stability across age indicates that these perceptions are most likely established before the age of 10 and underline the importance of primary schools and parents in prevention. Special attention should be directed to the dramatic loss of positive perceived appearance among African-American boy…

Survival analysis was applied to assess age-specific vaccination rates, and multilevel logistic regression analysis was used to assess …
Spousal Violence Against Women and Its Association With Women's Mental Health in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the issue of spousal violence is under-researched and still not considered a public health problem. To assess the association of spousal violence with women's mental health, a hospital-based cross-sectional survey was conducted through a structured interview schedule with 373 randomly selected ever-married women of reproductive age in eight randomly selected hospitals in the cities of Lahore and Sialkot, Pakistan. After controlling f…
Mortality in the German Pharmacoepidemiological Research Database (GePaRD) compared to national data in Germany
The lower mortality rates in almost all federal states might result from the higher socioeconomic status of the GePaRD study population compared to the overall population in Germany. In the federal state of Bremen, where socioeconomic representativeness is higher due to additional inclusion of two local health insurances, the mortality rates were in good accordance with external data. Agreement of the percentage of hospital deaths among all death…
Changes in risk perceptions during the 2014 Ebola virus disease epidemic
Risk communication appealing to cognitive reactions by informing clearly on the risk of infection in unaffected countries may decrease inappropriate behaviors
High-resolution epidemic simulation using within-host infection and contact data
Experimental data on the within-host infection have been able to capture upfront key transmission parameters of a pathogen; the applications of this approach will give us more time to prepare for potential epidemics. The population of interest in epidemic assessments could be modelled with an age-specific contact network without exhaustive amount of data. Further assessments and adaptations for different pathogens and scenarios to explore multile…
