What does the Independent Visitor role offer looked after children
The Children Act 1989 introduced the role of Independent Visitors (IVs) for looked after children; their task is ‘visiting, advising and befriending the child’ (section 7(2)(a)). However, research has found that IVs are not being made available for all children in care who qualify for this support (Knight, 1998; Oakley and Masson, 2000). Knight (1998) estimated that there were fewer than 40 schemes running for around 120 English local authorities…

Historical Thinking in Higher Education
This article provides an introduction to the results of a nationwide scoping study of student and staff perceptions of the nature and roles of historical thinking. In 2008–09, over 1400 students and 50 staff from 12 universities around Australia completed interviews and questionnaires. This research report examines student and staff responses to the second questionnaire item, asking for an assessment of the connection between particular activitie…

Vocational Ventures and Robust Independence
This article reports upon a survey of Honours and Postgraduate coursework programs in 44 tertiary institutions in Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. We review course structure, recruitment and different ways of addressing perceived problems in student preparation. We also examine future directions, highlighting the continuing importance of the Honours year to academic history teachers and their interest in sustaining a fourth-year…
Masculinity, Emotion and Subjectivity
This introduction summarizes the key themes raised in a symposium on masculinity, emotion and subjectivity at Monash University in 2006. These include ways of writing about the lived experience of masculinity in the past as well as the present, especially in terms of how men understand and use the “scripts” that prescribe and describe manliness, and questions of sources and approaches for the study of masculinity as a performance
Male Social Workers and the Anxieties of Women's Authority
In the 1920s and 1930s, the young men who worked in welfare and child protection were among the first to negotiate professional environments in which women wielded considerable authority. This article uses their descriptions of encounters with clients to examine the ways in which these men understood manliness in such a context, and the kinds of anxieties they dramatized in their case files. It argues that many defined and defended a form of masc…
Charity, Casework and the Dramas of Class in Melbourne, 1920–1940
This paper uses case files to describe the class relationships and identities that were made - and sometimes undermined – in the everyday work of Melbourne’s Charity Organisation Society during the 1920s and 1930s. It emphasises the importance of such sources in the history of class identities and relationships, and highlights women’s crucial roles along the ‘borders of class’. In this period, case files often dramatised encounters between applic…
Canons Old and New? the Undergraduate History Curriculum in 2004
This article summarises the main findings of a survey, conducted for the Australian Historical Association, of undergraduate history curricula in Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. While curriculum change and planning seem more ad hoc than most academic historians would like, a particularly interesting phenomenon is the emergence of a new kind of ‘canon’, in which large-scale, comparative and global histories - sometimes organised…
Student perspectives on temporary and permanent exit from university
This study examines student perspectives on their deferral and withdrawal from arts courses at Monash University during 2000. The research highlights a commonly unacknowledged difference between students in first semester and in second semester: it suggests that temporary and even permanent withdrawal in the early part of the academic year is most often a positive and hopeful strategy on the part of students who regard their problems as largely f…

The Lowest Rung
This 2003 book is a fascinating and moving portrait of the people who are suffering in a more divided and less egalitarian Australian society. Based on the author's conversations with hundreds of people living in three areas commonly described as 'disadvantaged' - Inala in Queensland, Mount Druitt in New South Wales and Broadmeadows in Victoria - this is a book in which impoverished Australians, who are often absent from debates about poverty, te…

A Little History of Australia
This history of Australia tells the whole story of the Great Southern Land, from its Aboriginal origins to 1997, including: discovery by European navigators who claimed the land as their own - even though it was already inhabited; the First Fleet, convict settlements, the gold rushes and turn-of-the-century questions about whether Australia could be a perfect society; the birth-pangs of a federated nation, and the experience of Australians in the…
