This article reports upon a survey of Honours and Postgraduate coursework programs in 44 tertiary institutions in Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. We review course structure, recruitment and different ways of addressing perceived problems in student preparation. We also examine future directions, highlighting the continuing importance of the Honours year to academic history teachers and their interest in sustaining a fourth-year focus on research.
