Youth research imagination: Carving space for alternative knowing

Youth cultures and career pathways – a well-being perspective on sticker artists’ cultural and professional engagements in St. Petersburg
Based on multiple interviews and observations in St Petersburg, Russia 2016–2021, this article suggests using the theory of sustainable well-being to describe the nexus of sticker art as youth cultural engagement and working life. We assume that this theoretical toolkit is applicable to the analysis of the dynamic relationships between various spheres of young people's lives and tensions caused by diverse societal structures. Our scrutiny reveals…
Between agency and uncertainty – Young women and men constructing citizenship through stories of sexual harassment
In this article, we examine young people's narratives on sexual harassment on how it is endured, objected, observed, and negotiated in diverse everyday life environments. The article is based on an analysis of thematic interviews with 36 young people aged 15–19 living in the metropolitan area of Helsinki, Finland. Altogether 23 young women and 13 young men participated in the interviews which were conducted at educational institutions as individu…
A need to be recognised: On the importance of shared semantics for young adults while not in education or employment
Young adults who are not in education or work are often depicted as deviating from the norm of gainful employment that is still widely shared across the Nordic countries. While it has been argued that young adults feel that they are being blamed for their NEET situation, this article seeks to identify the variety of interpretations they have of their situation and what kind of explanations can be proposed for the differences. Theoretically, persp…
Everyday Resistance in Making Oneself Visible: Young Adults’ Negotiations With Institutional Social Control in Youth Services

The encounters are analyzed as institutional social control — the practices and mechanisms that steer young people’s conduct in accordance with the normative order. We make visible young adults’ acts of everyday resistance as they negotiate, problematize, and challenge aspects of institutional social control. The data consist of 17 li…

Introduction to Special Issue: Exploring Confinement from the Perspectives of Young People
How do young people experience confinement, and what are the consequences of being confined? These are the key questions we wish to address in this special issue. The confinement of young people is a contested issue and generally not given much attention. In most societies, only a small number of young people experience being confined. However, because confinement is one of the most intrusive forms of control and punishment, and often directed at…
The social control of young women's clothing and bodies: A perspective of differences on racialization and sexualization
Public discourses and culturalist research often present patriarchal social control as the key element of minority youth's family relations. They focus on conflicts related to young women's sexual reputation when discussing Muslims and nonwestern minorities. Social control is often connected to honor-related violence and applied to assumptions of how young women are oppressed by their family members. In this article, we problematize such a connec…
Intergenerational negotiations on (hetero)sexuality and romantic relationships – views of young people and parents in multi-ethnic contexts
This article focuses on intergenerational negotiations on young people’s (13–19 years) sexuality and romantic relationships in families where one or both of the parents have migrated to Finland. By utilising the theoretical framework of intersectionality and negotiability of family relationships, we seek to diversify the often problem-oriented and culture-related examinations of ethnic minority families and young people’s position in them. Method…
Focus groups and the study of violence
The article examines the focus group method as a tool to study violence in youth residential care based on an empirical study of 38 young people in two Finnish reform schools. The key issue here is to reflect upon the processes of knowledge production as we trace the ways in which the institutional and situational context and the very form of focus groups affect the ways of talking about violence. Special attention is given to strong and weak the…
