Point-of-sale, court-ordered, cigarette-related corrective statements
Objective To estimate the prevalence of US adults’ exposure to point-of-sale corrective statements about the health effects, addictiveness, and deceptive marketing of cigarettes, as well as reactions to these messages. Methods We analysed data from the 2024 Health Information National Trends Survey, a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of the US civilian non-institutionalised population aged 18+ (March–September 2024, N=7278). Weig…
Responses to e-cigarette nicotine source descriptors
Nicotine source descriptors, especially "non-tobacco nicotine" and among past 30-day e-cigarette users, may reduce harm and addictiveness perceptions for e-cigarettes. Marketing regulations of nicotine source descriptors may be needed
Associations between absolute and relative electronic cigarette harm perceptions and information‐seeking behaviours among US adult current, former and never smokers
Smoking self-concept moderates the effects of self-affirmation on smoking-related beliefs and behavioral intentions
OBJECTIVE: Smoking stigmatization has been shown to hinder cigarette smoking cessation, especially among individuals with a strong smoker identity. Self-affirmation, a psychological threat-management coping strategy, can promote smoking cessation, and may mitigate the adverse consequences of stigmatization. DESIGN: Data from an online sample of 1,020 U.S. adult smokers were analyzed using multiple linear regression. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Partici…
Cigar package quantity and smoking behavior
Although we found consistent associations between package quantity and price, we found few associations between package quantity and changes in cigar smoking behaviors over time, particularly for cigarillos and large cigars. Key limitations include our adult-only analyses and inability to determine the package quantity that cigar users initiated with. Future studies could examine whether package quantity plays a causal role in filtered cigar use …
Population prevalence and predictors of self-reported exposure to court-ordered, tobacco-related corrective statements
In the first 6 months of corrective statement implementation, an estimated 40.6% of US adults reported at least one exposure to any corrective statement, and current smokers were more likely than never smokers to report exposure. Traditional media channels can be effective for tobacco-related message dissemination; however, they may fail to reach more than half of the adult population without additional targeted communication efforts
Implicit theories of smoking and association with current smoking status
Implicit theories of smoking refer to people's beliefs about whether smoking behavior is something that is changeable (incremental belief) or fixed (entity belief). This study examines implicit theories of smoking and its association with smoking behavior in a nationally representative sample of US adults using data from the Health Information National Trends Survey. The current results show that implicit theories of smoking are associated with s…
Tobacco-Product Use by Adults and Youths in the United States in 2013 and 2014
BACKGROUND: Noncigarette tobacco products are evolving rapidly, with increasing popularity in the United States. METHODS: We present prevalence estimates for 12 types of tobacco products, using data from 45,971 adult and youth participants (≥12 years of age) from Wave 1 (September 2013 through December 2014) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, a large, nationally representative, longitudinal study of tobacco use and h…

Design and methods of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (Path) Study
The cumulative, population-based data generated over time by the PATH Study will contribute to the evidence base to inform FDA's regulatory mission under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act and efforts to reduce the Nation's burden of tobacco-related death and disease
Implicit theories of the body among college women
This study explored the relationship between implicit theories of the body (ITB) and self-reported physical activity. ITB are beliefs about the malleability of the body. Individuals may hold entity ITB (that body appearance is fixed) or incremental ITB (that body appearance can be changed). Female undergraduate students (N = 313) completed an online survey assessing ITB, physical activity, and discrepancy between actual and ideal body weight. Par…
Lay theories of smoking and young adult nonsmokers' and smokers' smoking expectations
This study investigated the relationship between lay theories of cigarette smoking and expectations to smoke. An incremental lay theory of smoking entails the belief that smoking behavior can change; an entity theory entails the belief that smoking behavior cannot change. Undergraduate nonsmokers and smokers completed a survey that assessed lay theories of smoking and smoking expectations. Results demonstrated that lay theories of smoking were di…
More Is Not Always Better
Public policy decisions often appear based on an assumption that providing more options, more information, and greater decision-making autonomy to consumers will produce better outcomes. We examine reasons why this "more-is-better" approach exists based on the psychological literature. Although better outcomes can result from informed consumer choice, we argue that more options, information, and autonomy can also lead to unintended negative conse…
Cognitive and affective perceptions of vulnerability as predictors of exercise intentions among people with type 2 diabetes
Most conventional measures of risk perception such as perceived likelihood address largely deliberative or cognitive perceptions of vulnerability. Nevertheless, affective perceptions of vulnerability such as worry may have different antecedents and consequences than do these conventional measures, serve as stronger predictors of behavior, and qualify effects of conventional deliberative risk perceptions on behavior. In this study, we assessed how…
Food and Drug Administration Evaluation and Cigarette Smoking Risk Perceptions
These findings highlight the need for proactive, effective communication to the public about the aims of new tobacco product regulations

Quit Attempts and Intention to Quit Cigarette Smoking Among Young Adults in the United States
Objectives. We investigated variables associated with quitting behaviors among current, daily, and nondaily young adult smokers in the United States. Methods. Data from the national 2003 Tobacco Use Special Cessation Supplement to the Current Population Survey were analyzed to identify factors associated with quit attempts and serious intention to quit among young adult smokers aged 18 to 30 years (n=7912). Results. Daily smokers who smoked 20 or…
