Transitioning to green cities
The transition to green energy and sustainable urban planning, guided by EU policies and local community perceptions, has positioned the concept of the “green city” as a key topic in both academic and practical discourse. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the current understanding of green cities, while also identifying cities structurally prepared for this transition. The literature review highlights the significance of the green city …
Bears and Humans
This paper concerns the relationship between bears and humans among the Khanty people: in particular, what is meant by their claim that the bear is 'half man, half animal, half god'. Within this focus, it introduces the Khanty concept of a "more-than-human" society and examines the interconnections between its constituent parties. It explores the worldview in which the dividing lines between human and natural, and human and divine, are not as sha…

Conflict and Fieldwork
In the first part of this study, I will take into consideration the possible relationships between the anthropologist and the subjects being researched with regards to the terms informant, friendship and cooperation, focusing on the possible connections between them and their impacts. It seems obvious that the relationship between the anthropologist and locals can only function if mutual trust develops in an atmosphere that enables research subje…
Ethnographic accounts of visitors from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy to the Asian peripheries of Russia and their contribution to the development of systematic ethnological studies in the Monarchy
The authors intend to provide an overview of the diaries, travelogues, and correspondence of Austro-Hungarians who traveled to the Asian peripheries of Russia during the Dual Monarchy. We aim to contribute to ongoing discussions on colonial discourses of otherness, as well as to the historical development of ethnographic scholarship in Europe. Travel writing, orientalism, and colonial encounters with Asian otherness are closely intermingling phen…
Flying half a metre above the ground
Zoltan Nagy's paper about the Vasyugan Khanty people is based on empirical data from the 1990s. It interprets the culture of the Vasyugan Khanty as an alcohol culture - a culture in which vodka and the consumption of vodka permeates and determines daily life. The paper is a micro-focus analysis from the Khanty viewpoint. Alcohol is interpreted as the force that constitutes society, and alcohol consumption as a social act. It has an important econ…
Television and Problems of Interpretating Cultural Phenomena Among the Vasiugan [Eastern] Khanty
The article investigates how television becomes one of the forums where the Khanty fight their symbolic struggle against a colonizing culture, which stands at a higher technological level. The scope of this cultural struggle reaches beyond the practice of watching television and results in more serious changes in the Khanty worldview. The article analyzes how watching TV verifies, modifies, and develops beliefs; how elements of Khanty identity ar…
Climate extremes and grassland potential productivity
The considerable interannual variability (IAV) (~5 PgC yr−1) observed in atmospheric CO2 is dominated by variability in terrestrial productivity. Among terrestrial ecosystems, grassland productivity IAV is greatest. Relationships between grassland productivity IAV and climate drivers are poorly explained by traditional multiple-regression approaches. We propose a novel method, the perfect-deficit approach, to identify climate drivers of grassland…
Relating Introspective Accuracy to Individual Differences in Brain Structure
Naval Gazing Simple perceptual tasks, such as detecting the contrast between light and dark bars in a grating, have been a mainstay of psychophysical research for decades. This kind of task makes it possible to obtain both an objective measure of how accurate subjects are and a subjective measure of how confident they are in their judgments. Fleming et al. (p. 1541 ; see the Perspective by Lau and Maniscalco ) have taken this approach one step fu…
Climate control of terrestrial carbon exchange across biomes and continents
Understanding the relationships between climate and carbon exchange by terrestrial ecosystems \nis critical to predict future levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide because of the potential \naccelerating effects of positive climate–carbon cycle feedbacks. However, directly observed \nrelationships between climate and terrestrial CO2 exchange with the atmosphere across biomes \nand continents are lacking. Here we present data describing the relatio…
