Recension av Anders Ahlbäck, Johanna Ilmakunnas, Hanna Lindberg & Pirjo Markkola (red.) 2025. Genus, arbete och landsbygd. En livsvärld i rörelse 1500–1960. Helsingfors & Stockholm: Skrifter utgivna av Svenska litteratursällskapet i Finland nr 883. 378 s.
Test–retest reliability, practice effects and estimates of change
The present study aimed to establish test–retest reliability and investigate practice effects of the Mindmore cognitive assessment tool, a digital adaptation of traditional pencil and paper tests designed for self‐administration. Additionally, normative change scores for the most frequently used tests were derived. A total of 149 healthy Swedish adults (aged 20–79) completed the test battery twice, 1 month apart. The battery assessed attention an…

Faith, Death, and the Internet in Norway and Sweden
The all-inclusive issue in studies of memorial websites on the internet concerns how mourners express their emotions and concepts of belief regarding a deceased person’s afterlife. The living believe that their ultimate contact with the deceased will occur after their own death. In Sweden, this also applies to deceased pets. Memorial websites to the deceased generally contain far more traditional Christian concepts in Norway than in Sweden. In Sw…

An Experienced Ethnologist's Thoughts on Digitalization, Open Access, and Open Data as New Research Assets
During the last two years of Covid pandemic we have seen the issues related to digitalization, Open Access, and Open Data (meaning open access to research results and research data) become more salient. Scientists have been unable to access archives and libraries in person, or to meet colleagues and students in physical meetings in the form of seminars, conferences or congresses. Distance has become the key word. Digital contacts have become the …

Death, Dying and Bereavement in Norway and Sweden in Recent Times
One of my research projects examines pictorial symbols and epitaphs on gravestones in Norway and Sweden. The focus has been on the 1990s and the 2000s. The choice of this period is motivated by the fact that new national burial laws were adopted in both countries in the early 1990s. These laws provided the next of kin with the possibility of choosing memorial symbols and inscriptions more freely than had previously been the case. To judge from th…
Stories from below
This article adopts a ‘cultural biography’ approach to the examination of an archaeological collection from Arica, Chile, involving two museums located in Gothenburg, Sweden. It provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the collection and how the meanings and contexts of a cranium belonging to this collection have changed over time. Different stages in the biography of the cranium are reconstructed here: we document and describe a shift…
The researcher's role in the research process. Reflections and experiences of an ethnologist
In this paper I present my reflections and experiences from decades of ethnological research until now. Auto-ethnography means that researchers use their personal experiences in a self-reflexive way in the ethnographic research process both regarding data collection and analysis. The aim is that researchers in this way may better understand and interpret other people and cultures which they study in the field. The personal background plays a role…
Scientific Contacts within Ethnology and Folkloristics between Sweden and Estonia. Personal Experiences and Considerations
In recent years, presentations of scholars' subjective experiences and reflections have been an object of increasing interest in Nordic ethnology and folkloristics (Hellspong & Skott 2010; Rogan & Eriksen 2013). In this survey I will present a self-reflective overview of my experiences with new research contacts that became possible beginning in 1991, after the Baltic States -Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania -had been in isolation for decades. Alth…
Death and Bereavement on the Internet in Sweden and Norway
Memorial websites on the Internet constitute a new form for expressing grief and for remembering deceased relatives and friends. In my sample of memorial websites, I have studied those that are open to the public. Such memorial sites have had an explosive development during the 2000s. The messages become a virtual, social meeting place by giving mourners an opportunity to express themselves and avoid remaining alone with their grief. In this stud…
The economic cost of brain disorders in Europe
Background and purpose: In 2005, we presented for the first time overall estimates of annual costs for brain disorders (mental and neurologic disorders) in Europe. This new report presents updated, more accurate, and comprehensive 2010 estimates for 30 European countries. Methods: One‐year prevalence and annual cost per person of 19 major groups of disorders are based on ‘best estimates’ derived from systematic literature reviews by panels of exp…

Death in a 19th-Century Peasant Society - Analysed by Means of a Peasant's Diaries from a Rural Community on the Western Coast of Sweden
Diaries can provide a micro-perspective on people's way of life and the world of conceptualization in a local society, and also on the changes that took place in the years that the diaries were written. This can be considered micro-history. While conducting fieldwork for the research project "Cultural contacts in Bohusln's coastal rural communities" in the 1970s, I came across some detailed handwritten diaries. These had been written by Jakob Jon…
Rituals around Sudden Death in Recent Years
Life is normally expected to proceed through childhood, youth, adulthood and old age. What happens then if death occurs at some earlier phase of life and not at a far distant time in people's everyday lives? This will most often be a sudden and unexpected death. How do the nearest family, friends and acquaintances of the deceased cope with this? How and why are new rituals created, how are they spread, and what meaning do they have for the people…
Students with disabilities participating in mainstream schools
This paper examines participatory arrangements for students with physical disabilities in mainstream education, cooperation between teachers and therapists to ensure that these arrangements are efficient and the organizational prerequisites for such cooperation. The study comprises data obtained from 14 ‘groups’, with each group consisting of a student with physical disabilities aged 9–19 years, their main teacher and the relevant therapists from…
The Use of the Senses in Religious Revival Movements
This paper demonstrates that sight and hearing have played the most important roles in the Protestant regions of Scandinavia. In many instances, the phenomena linked to sight and hearing have been maintained for long periods of time, and new phenomena have come into existence in other respects. Revivalist movements have wavered between maintenance of traditions and a regeneration that would enable them to awaken interest among new generations. Se…
The role of theory in disability research -springboard or strait-jacket
This article is an elaboration of a key-note speech presented at the annual conference of the Nordic Network on Disability Research in Copenhagen 2001 discussing the role of theory in disability research. The discussion is based on reviews of disability research, mostly from Scandinavia and Britain. Two types of non-theoretical perspectives and three types of theoretical perspectives were found in the reviews. Strengths and weaknesses of the diff…
Studying personal experiences of disability ‐ What happened to verstehen when einfühlung disappeared
For some time, disability researchers have shown a growing interest in personal experiences of disability. To some extent this interest can be understood as a response to the growing support for an emancipatory approach in disability research and the awareness that people with disabilities often have been deprived of their opportunities to speak for themselves. A striking characteristic of the studies of personal experiences is a lack of analysis…

Women and Men in the Coastal Districts of the Swedish Westcoast. A Study of the Roles of Men and Women and of Cultural Contacts
This study will show the differences in the conditions of life for men and women during the earlier part of the 20th century and the consequences thereof. The men lived far from home a great part of the year, because of their deep-sea fishing. One notices the responsibility the women had in many areas of life. They developed a significant independence within their areas of responsibility. The areas for which the men carried responsibility at home…

Temporal aspects of teaching and learning ‐ implications for pupils with physical disabilities
The aim of this study was to describe and try to understand how temporal structures in school setting influence the performance of daily school tasks for pupils with physical disabilities. Seven pupils between 7 and 15 years of age were included. Data were collected through field observations and semi‐structured interviews with pupils and each pupil’s teacher. The findings show that pupils with disabilities often did not have the time to perform …
