  • Mortality and long-term exposure to source-specific PM2·5: Evidence from a national cohort study in China

Open Access•Xia Meng, Yuchang Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Planetary Health•2026

  • Flood exposure contributes to under-five mortality in low- and middle-income countries

Open Access•Pengfei Li, Mingkun Tong et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2025

Flooding is one of the most prevalent natural disasters worldwide, which can have long-term indirect effects on child health. This study presents the first assessment of <5-year-old deaths (U5Ds) attributable to long-term flood exposure in 100 low- and middle-income countries, which was found to be dramatically higher than acute U5Ds attributable to all forces of nature. The vulnerable communities identified in this study can help plan relevant c…

  • E.I. Kychanov’s Translation of the “Revised and Newly Approved Code of the Heavenly Prosperity Reign” in the Context of the Development of Modern Translation Studies

Open Access•Xia Meng, Meng Xia et al.•ARTICLE•Written Monuments of the Orient•2023

E.I.Kychanov was well known in Chinese academic circles since 1980s, and his translations of ancient Tangut manuscripts into Russian are often used by Chinese scholars as reference material. This article focuses on the scholar’s translation of the Tangut “Revised and Newly Approved Code of the Heavenly Prosperity Reign (1149–1168)” and analyzes some features of his translation work, his chosen strategies and methods, and also comments on the Chin…

  • Atmospheric elemental carbon pollution and its regional health disparities in China

Open Access•Yun Hang, Xia Meng et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Previous studies have reported that atmospheric elemental carbon (EC) may pose potentially elevated toxicity when compared to total ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ). However, most research on EC has been conducted in the US and Europe, whereas China experiences significantly higher EC pollution levels. Investigating the health impact of EC exposure in China presents considerable challenges due to the absence of a monitoring network to do…

  • Association between light at night and the risk of child death in sub-saharan Africa: A cross-sectional analysis based on DHS data

Open Access•Xinyue Li, Jovine Bachwenkizi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

In Africa, the risk of U5MR decreased with increasing LAN, especially in areas with lower LAN. The results suggest that the development of urbanization and socio-economic conditions may be beneficial to child health, especially in regions with low LAN. The use of LAN as a proxy may offer an intriguing approach for identifying areas requiring targeted development in urbanization and socio-economic conditions

  • Rapid Analysis of Residues of 186 Pesticides in Hawk Tea Using Modified QuEChERS Coupled with Gas Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Open Access•Xiao Shu, Nengming Chu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

In this work, the QuEChERS method was modified and evaluated for the determination of 186 pesticides from caffeine-free and fatty hawk tea prior to their gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry analysis for the first time. The results showed that the combination of MgSO 4 + PSA + MWCNTs plus EMR-Lipid provided the lowest matrix effect and best recovery; 117 of 186 pesticides manifested weak matrix effects. Thus, for accurate quantification, i…

  • Bearing Witness to Traumatic Memory: An Ethical Approach to Ken Liu’s Speculative Fiction “The Man Who Ended History - A Documentary

    Xia Meng, Meng Xia•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2022•References: 10

This article looks at the problematic witnessing envisioned in Chinese American writer Ken Liu’s speculative fiction “The Man Who Ended History - A Documentary,” in which the back-to-the-past virtual witness is actualized through time travel. Ken Liu’s writing contributes a documentary narrative of the witnessing of witnessing that extends the temporal dimension of witness and allows the flow between fictive and factual. This thought experiment p…

  • Effects of maternal exposure to fine particulate matter on birth weight in 16 counties across China: A quantile regression analysis

Open Access•Kaipu Wu, Huanqing Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

The adverse effects of air pollution during pregnancy have been studied intensively, but mainly utilizing linear and logistic models, which generally yield little information about how air pollution may change the distribution of birth weight in populations. We aimed to examine the effects of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) on quantiles of birth weight, and if effects were heterogeneous in different populations and regions. We used a prospectiv…

  • Random forest models for PM 2.5 speciation concentrations using Misr fractional AODs

Open Access•Guannan Geng, Xia Meng et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

It is increasingly recognized that various chemical components of PM 2.5 might have differential toxicities to human health, although such studies are hindered by the sparse or non-existent coverage of ground PM 2.5 speciation monitors. The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) onboard the Terra satellite has an innovative design to provide information about aerosol shape, size and extinction that are more related to PM 2.5 speciation conc…

  • Does the Development of a High-Speed Railway Improve the Equalization of Medical and Health Services? Evidence from China

Open Access•Gangqiang Yang, Yuxi Ma et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Does the development of a high-speed railway (HSR) have a significant impact on the equalization of medical and health resources allocated among cities? Based on the panel data of 67 cities in China from 2007 to 2016, this paper investigates the direct and dynamic effects of HSR development on the equalization of medical and health services by using the difference-in-differences (DID) method. The empirical results show that an HSR connection sign…

  • Does a Different Household Registration Affect Migrants’ Access to Basic Public Health Services in China

    Open Access•Xia Meng, Meng Xia•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

On the basis of the China Migrants Dynamic Survey Data of 2015, the author provides an analysis of how a different household registration impacts migrants' access to preventive care provided by public health services, such as health records and medical knowledge, in areas of immigration. This study shows that eliminating the distinction between agricultural and non-agricultural permanent residence registration could raise the rate of establishing…
