  • Geoarchaeological review of the main flint outcrops in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula from the classical geological sources

    Open Access•José Luis Ramírez-Amador, Eduardo Molina-Piernas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

This study presents the first comprehensive geoarchaeological synthesis and mapping of primary flint outcrops in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula, specifically across the Penibetic, Subbetic, and Campo de Gibraltar domains. Through a systematic review of classical geological literature and reinterpretation of existing cartography, we identify, characterise, and georeference the main flint-bearing formations over an area of nearly 7000 km 2 . Ou…

  • Integrated Documentation and Non-Destructive Surface Characterization of Ancient Egyptian Sandstone Blocks at Karnak Temples (Luxor, Egypt)

Open Access•Abdelrhman Fahmy, Salvador Domínguez Bella et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025

The Karnak Temples are considered one of Egypt’s most significant archaeological sites, dating back to the Middle Kingdom (c. 2000–1700 BC) and were continuously expanded until the Ptolemaic period (305–30 BC). As the second most visited UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site in Egypt after the Giza Pyramids, Karnak faces severe deterioration processes due to prolonged exposure to environmental impacts, mechanical damage, and historical interv…

  • Design and Development of a Scientific Lithotheque

    Open Access•José Luis Ramírez-Amador, Eduardo Molina-Piernas et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•Referencias: 3

The creation of the LitUCA lithotheque represents a significant methodological advance in geoarchaeological research in the southwest of Spain. This article presents a systematic framework for the conservation, documentation, and digital integration of lithic collections, with particular emphasis on data traceability, reproducibility, and interoperability. The methodology adopted is inspired by international standards, adapted to the regional con…

  • Ancient Egyptian Granite Graffiti of Bigeh Island, Philae Archaeological Site (Aswan, Egypt)

Open Access•Abdelrhman Fahmy, Salvador Domínguez Bella et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•Referencias: 3

This study investigates the deterioration of granite graffiti at the Philae Archaeological Site on Bigeh Island (Aswan, Egypt), attributed to Khaemwaset (1281–1225 BCE, 19th Dynasty). These graffiti, despite being carved into durable Aswan granite, are experiencing progressive degradation due to environmental and hydrological factors. This research aims to analyze the mineralogical and chemical transformations affecting the graffiti to provide a …

  • Archaeological Lithotheques of Siliceous Rocks in Spain

    Open Access•David Ortega, A Arrizabalaga et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2025•Referencias: 15

The use of lithotheques, libraries or collections of rocks is relatively recent in archaeological research in Spain. These collections have mostly been formed through isolated initiatives in different institutions, without any scientific strategy to guide their development and growth. The perspective in the last few years has changed substantially as these infrastructures are now regarded as a scientific resource of great interest and potential i…

Open Access•Joana Belmiro, Xavier Terradas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2025•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 31

Analyses of raw materials and the distinction between local/regional and long-distance sources have proven invaluable for understanding the extensive movements, interactions, and social networks during the Upper Palaeolithic in the Iberian Peninsula. However, unlike other parts of Iberia, research on the management and acquisition of raw materials in the south and west of Iberia remains relatively underdeveloped. Despite significant knowledge abo…

Open Access•Alejandro Muñoz Muñoz, Diego Fernández-Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•Virtual Archaeology Review•2023

The cist tombs necropolis at Castillejos de Luna, in Sierra de Gibralmora-Sierra del Hacho (Pizarra, Málaga, Spain) was known from the graphic documentation and the grave goods of two tombs. New studies have documented nine burials. The aim of this article is to present the new virtualisation work that has been carried out in the necropolis, to generate a new three-dimensional (3D) documentation of the currently known records, which are in accept…

  • Molluscs as Personal Adornment in a Gravettian Context from Cueva de Ardales (Málaga, Spain)

Juan Jesús Cantillo Duarte, Gerd‐christian Weniger et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2023•Referencias: 3

Molluscs used as personal adornment in Gravettian context are scarce in the Iberian Peninsula. Less than 200 pieces have been barely found along the Mediterranean, and most of them in coastal sites. This article presents thirteen new items – in the majority of marine origin – found by a Spanish-German team during a joint research project in Cueva de Ardales (Ardales, Malaga, Spain). The cave is one of the few interior sites in which this type of …

  • New archaeological data on the upper Paleolithic site of cueva de Malalmuerzo (Moclín, Granada, Spain)

    Open Access•Lidia Cabello, Pedro Cantalejo-Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•Munibe Antropologia-Arkeologia•2020

The Malalmuerzo cave (Moclín, Granada, Spain) has been known since the 1980s for its archaeological remains and rock art, dated to the Neolithic and the Solutrean periods respectively. However, following thirty years of neglect, our team carried out a brief archaeological intervention after looters destroyed parts of the sediment fill of the cave. The refreshing of disturbed surfaces and the examination of a small undisturbed profile produced man…

This is a large open-air rocky shelter, in which various schematic style pictographs were found, in the early years of this century. During a recent visit to the site, the existence of an important Palaeolithic figurative set was also noted,…

Excavators examining breccia deposits are faced with the prospect of extracting finds from a material akin to concrete. Nevertheless such deposits are sometimes the only witness of early Palaeolithic occupation. Our inventive authors put aside the hammers, acids and explosives of earlier days, and used quarry techniques to cut the breccia into small blocks, which they then freed from their finds in the laboratory, using tools developed in palaeon…

In the south-west of Spain, the archaeological site of El Jadramil (Arcos de la Frontera, C diz) presents a great number of vertical cylindrical pits and horizontal subterranean galleries, with an estimated chronology of the Bronze Age (3000-2000 BC). A new interpretation of underground extractive mining techniques used at the site is presented in this article. The archaeology of the site shows how agricultural societies exploited local raw mater…
