  • Africa’s next debt crisis

    Carolyn Bassett•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 5

A new African debt crisis appears imminent, which will have new features because several countries have recently introduced international sovereign bonds. Organisations such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank increasingly acknowledge the risk of such a crisis, but continue to prescribe debt-management strategies based on liberalisation and government spending cuts. Insights drawn from liberals favouring government regulation ident…

  • From Worker Mobilisation to Policy Engagement

Carolyn Bassett•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2017

In response to a shifting political environment characterised by political and policy negotiations, South Africa’s largest and most influential trade union federation, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), incorporated policy research, analysis and engagement into its core activities beginning in the 1990s. This article analyses some of the challenges COSATU faced in this new role by critically examining the contributions of the Na…

  • An alternative to democratic exclusion? The case for participatory local budgeting in South Africa

    Carolyn Bassett•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary African…•2016•Referências: 34

This article makes a case for transforming local governance to embrace inclusion and accountability through participatory local budgeting. South Africa’s history of participatory local governance and policy-making, which was incorporated to some extent in post-apartheid institutions of local government, implied some intention to follow Brazil’s ground-breaking participatory local governance model. Yet, despite the possibility that such an approac…

  • South African trade unions and globalisation

Open Access•Marlea Clarke, Marlea Clarke Marlea Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•Work Organisation Labour &…•2008

In this paper, we assess the South African labour movement's engagement with globalisation in the 1990s and its implications for labour politics in the following decade. Drawing on extensive archival research and interviews with key informants, we show that, although the labour movement had become committed to a ‘high road’, post-Keynesian restructuring vision by 1993, its representatives failed to pursue that vision consistently in the economic …

This article revisits Saul and Gelb's 1981 analysis of South African capital's ‘formative action’, employing their framework to assess how capital hasshaped the economic framework since 1990. I show that once prominentbusiness leaders became committed to non‐racial democracy, the privatesector became enormously influential in shaping the economic programme. The policy changes permitted South African firms to restructure theiroperations largely on …

  • The Zuma Affair, Labour and the Future of Democracy in South Africa

    Carolyn Bassett, Marlea Clarke•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2008•Citada por: 3•Referências: 9

South Africa's new democracy has been tested by the controversy over the candidacy of Jacob Zuma, who became the successor to President Thabo Mbeki as leader of the African National Congress in December 2007, and is poised to become the country's new president after the 2009 elections. Few social actors had more at stake than organised labour, which found itself sidelined from the policy process by its erstwhile political allies under Mbeki. Labo…

  • Labour and Hegemony in South Africa’s First Decade of Majority Rule

    Carolyn Bassett•ARTICLE•Studies in Political Economy•2005•Citada por: 2•Referências: 2

Carolyn Bassett’s article “Labour and Hegemony in South Africa’s First Decade of Majority Rule” explores some of the general dilemmas faced by progressive activists; in particular, problems faced by democratic trade unionists in the context of the post-apartheid government in South Africa. The article seeks to explain why a powerful and ostensibly socialist trade union, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), adopted a strategy to co…
