Open Access•Alison Kennedy, Richard Gray et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

The mental health of people living in farming communities has been identified as an important public health issue. Cumulative exposure to a range of situational factors contributes to heightened risk of poor mental health and suicide. This study investigates the late Mozambican artist Malangatana Valente Ngwenya's mural in Zimpeto as an art object that contributed to peacebuilding in Mozambique during the devastating internal conflict known as the Sixteen Years War (1976–1992). The article draws on an interview with Malangatana Valente Ngwenya recorded while shooting the BBC TV film Homeland, the raw footage used as ethnographic material and recent interviews with the artist's…

  • The ‘recipe for success’: Co-designing strategies to enhance care transitions from hospital to home

    Open Access•Jacobi Elliott, Anna Kras‐Dupuis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Background: There is growing recognition of the importance and benefits of patient-and caregiver-centred care approaches for older adults and individuals with complex medical needs during points of care transitions. Effective care transitions can improve patient, caregiver, and provider experiences, and reduce avoidable emergency department visits and readmissions. Despite the widely recognized benefit of effective care transitions, health care p…

  • The Association between Nursing Skill Mix and Patient Outcomes in a Mental Health Setting: An Observational Feasibility Study

Open Access•Nompilo Moyo, Martin Jones et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Higher levels of educational preparation for nurses are associated with lower mortality rates in both medical and surgical wards. In mental health inpatient wards, few studies have examined whether specialist mental health nurse training has any impact on patient outcomes. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to establish the feasibility of extracting and linking nurse education and inpatient outcome data from hospital administra…

Open Access•Kuda Muyambi, Shaun Dennis et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for depression. There are established education programmes which prepare specialist mental health workers to practice CBT. CBT is a complex treatment requiring intensive preparation and clinical skill to deliver. An alternative and simpler psychological treatment, behavioural activation (BA), may be as effective as CBT. An advantage of BA over CBT is that you do not need to be a specia…

Almost one third of the South Australian population reside in regional locations, which are serviced by just 8% of the State's total psychiatrist workforce. Consequently, access to psychotropic medications in regional South Australia (SA) can be challenging. Granting prescribing rights to mental health nurses (MHNs) located in regional settings presents an opportunity to increase consumer access to psychotropic medications. The aim of the study w…

    Open Access•Tamara Backhouse, Bridget Penhale et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Care-home residents with dementia can experience behavioural and psychological symptoms such as aggression, agitation, anxiety, wandering, calling out and sexual disinhibition. Care-home staff have a duty to keep residents safe. However, residents with dementia can pose particular challenges in this area. In this paper, we draw on a study which explored how care-home staff manage dementia-related behaviours. In-depth ethnographic case studies at …

The next major military operation was the intervention of Diogo Simoes Madeira on behalf of Mutapa Gatsi Rusere against dissident sections led by Matuzianhe in 1609. Small numbers of musketeers, varying in strength from thirty to seventy, co-operating with the Mutapa&s;s armies, were here able to turn the scales in several engagements against much more numerous forces. Rightly, the intervention has been seen as one of the most important steps by …

Richard Gray, Alessandra Tanesini•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Quarterly•2010•Cited by: 1

Traditional accounts of perception endorse an input–output model: perception is the input from world to mind and action is the output from mind to world. In contrast, enactive accounts propose action to be constitutive of perception. We focus on Noë's sensorimotor version of enactivism, with the aim of clarifying the proper limits of enactivism more generally. Having explained Noë's particular version of enactivism, which accounts for the content…

Opening ParagraphStudents of Europe's contact with Africa have long regarded the Christian missions in the ancient kingdom of Kongo as a peculiarly potent symbol. For some the conversion and subsequent reign of Afonso I in the first half of the sixteenth century were a momentary aberration, a false dawn quickly to be obscured by the realities of the exploitation associated with mercantile capitalism and the horrors of the Atlantic slave trade.
