Difference, Cognition, and Causality
This article juxtaposes two very different texts, Charles de Bovelles's Ars oppositorum (1511) and Maurice Scève's Délie (1544), examples of Latin prose philosophy and vernacular love lyric respectively. In the introduction to his fascinating L'Ordre du temps, Max Engammare outlines an ambitious project of moving between a ‘histoire totale’ and the histories of ideas, theology, literature, the book and so on (p. 17). Indeed, Engammare's work challenges disciplinary boundaries by bringing together a wide rang…
Le Vif du sens
By Thomas Hunkeler. (Cahiers d'Humanisme et Renaissance, 66). Geneva, Droz, 2003. 321 pp. The introduction to this adventurous book includes a fairly lengthy discussion of the way in which literary texts and non-literary texts should be read together; Thomas Hunkeler expresses his intention to bring Scève's poems into dialogue with non-literary texts not in order to trace the influences of the latter upon the former, but rather to compare them, a…
