Geopolitical energy shocks and the hidden costs for the global south: A critical review
Geopolitical energy disruptions are often treated as short-term shocks to fossil fuel supply and price stability. This review argues that, for many developing and emerging economies in the Global South, such disruptions can become embedded in fiscal systems, resource frontiers, value-chain positions, and governance arrangements. Using a structured interpretive review of peer-reviewed literature and institutional policy reports, the article develo…
Relationships of mobile phone duration and unlock counts with sleep: Double machine learning and traditional statistical methods
Background The association between mobile phone use and sleep is still contested, especially for youth. While most existing studies predominantly rely on self-reported smartphone duration using traditional statistical methods, the potential association between mobile phone unlock counts and sleep has been neglected in prior studies primarily due to the difficulty of estimating the data. This relationship has been largely overlooked due to objecti…

Community Detection Attack in Complex Networks: A Multiobjective Perspective
The abuse of community detection algorithms posed significant risks of privacy leakage. To protect personal privacy in complex networks, community detection attack (CDA) algorithms have been proposed, which modify a small number of connections to obscure the original community structure. However, most of the existing studies focus on designing effective attack strategies while the attack budget should be given by decision makers in advance. In th…
Accelerometry and dual-scale neighborhood indicators for screening of MoCA-defined cognitive impairment: An interpretable machine-learning study

Does zero mean nothing? Investigating the attentional mechanism of the hidden-zero effect in risky decision-making
The framing of risky choices can shape and alter individuals' risk preferences. Within every option in a risky choice (e.g., 70% chance to win $100), there is a naturally embedded but hidden zero outcome (e.g., 30% chance to win $0). Here, we tested the hidden-zero effect by comparing participants' risky choices between two different conditions (i.e., presenting options with or without explicit-zero outcomes) with a full range of risky probabilit…

Existing research shows that significant differences exist in the institutional setup of WUAs in China, and that WUAs have not been universally successful in saving water and …
Power politics in the revision of China's Environmental Protection Law
Environmental law making, like other legislative processes in China, used to take place behind closed doors. A major innovation in recent years is that it is now normal to consult the public on draft laws, although it is not yet prescribed in the Law on Legislation. It is tempting to interpret the delayed approval of the EPL revision as a double victory: an environmentally unfriendly draft was blocked, and public debate (rather than closed-door s…

Exploring the Correlates of Parental Consent for Children’s Participation in Surveys: An Intergenerational Longitudinal Study
The validity of survey research has been challenged by an alarming increase in nonresponse rates over the past four decades. In reaction to the public’s increasing reluctance to participate in surveys, scholars have focused on the reasons for, and consequences of, nonresponse. However, children’s participation in research is a neglected area of study. We address this gap in the literature by examining parental consent to allow their children to p…

Public perceptions of environmental risk in China
China, as a ‘double risk’ society, is in urgent need for effective environmental risk management systems. Compared with other risks, man-made environmental risks have not been given due weight. Public awareness and perceptions of environmental risks are crucial in all phases of effective risk management. However, little is known about public perceptions of environmental risks in China. To contribute to better understanding of public perception of…
Integrating and Prioritizing Environmental Risks in China's Risk Management Discourse
Human society faces a growing number of risks, including both natural disasters and risks that stem from human behavior. This is particularly true in China, which is experiencing rapid social, economic and political transitions. Since the 1970s, China's modernization process has been accompanied by the emergence of an increasing number of man-made risks, in particular environmental pollution, but until very recently, a risk management system did …

Hyperinflation and Stabilisation: Cagan Revisited
Using a variant of the Cagan model with rational expectations, this paper shows that expected stabilisation can result in a budget deficit in excess of the maximum inflation tax. A cap on the deficit dampens inflation expectations and raises real balances thus increasing the yield of the inflation tax for any given rate of inflation. This study extends the work of Drazen and Helpman (1990) by including a stochastic budgetary process and using opt…
Designing Monetary Policy when Unemployment Persists
This paper investigates how unemployment persistence affects the optimal delegation of monetary policy to an independent central banker (CB). Two opposing forces are shown to be at work: with more persistence, the government’s incentive to stabilize the economy is greater; but (if the CB is forward‐looking) its incentive to create inflation surprises is also greater. We show that, owing to the second effect, the government may wish not to delegat…
Shareholders and Stakeholders: Human Capital and Industry Equilibrium
Producing high technology output and supplying sophisticated services often involves costly investment in industry-specific skills. But the threat of poaching means that it is the individual 'stakeholder', not the firm, who must bear the cost. We investigate various mechanisms for funding human capital investment in an industry equilibrium framework where capital market imperfections would (in the absence of intervention) result in underinvestmen…

Moral Hazard and The US Stock Market: Analysing the ‘Greenspan Put
When the risk premium in the US stock market fell substantially, Shiller (2000) attributed this to a bubble driven by psychological factors. An alternative explanation is that the observed risk premium may be reduced by one‐sided intervention policy on the part of the Federal Reserve which leads investors into the erroneous belief that they are insured against downside risk. By allowing for partial credibility and state dependent risk aversion, w…

What is in a word? No versus Yes differentially engage the lateral orbitofrontal cortex
The words "No" and "Yes" are involved in conditioning to prohibit or encourage behavior, respectively. The authors, therefore, hypothesized that these words would be attributed to endogenous valence, activating neuronal circuits involved with valence and emotional control. Functional MRI (fMRI) at 4 Tesla was used to record regional brain activity while participants were exposed to emphatic vocalizations of the words. Results showed that No and Y…
