  • Climate agreement-making across negotiation and non-negotiation spaces: How states participate in the UN climate negotiations

Open Access•Sarah Tegas, Carola Klöck et al.•ARTICLE•International Environmental…•2026

Participation in multilateral negotiations such as those on climate change is key to understanding negotiation processes and outcomes. Despite its importance, participation – what negotiators actually do – remains understudied and ill understood. We address this gap by examining participation in UN climate negotiations. Specifically, we collect data across all 198 Parties and 58 negotiation sessions (subsidiary body meetings, SBs, and Conferences…

  • Path Analysis With Mixed-Scale Variables: Categorical ML, Least Squares, and Bayesian Estimations

Open Access•Xinya Liang, Paula Castro et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2026

In applied research across education, the social and behavioral sciences, and medicine, path models frequently incorporate both continuous and ordinal manifest variables to predict binary outcomes. This study employs Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate six estimators: robust maximum likelihood with probit and logit links (MLR-probit, MLR-logit), mean- and variance-adjusted weighted and unweighted least squares (WLSMV, ULSMV), and Bayesian methods…

  • New Kids on the (University) Block: Narratives of Place, Political Participation and Change by Students in Mobility

    Open Access•Zeno Mutton, Paula Castro•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•2026•References: 10

University students that move to study can constitute themselves as political actors in their new city, and regarding their new communities, by stably engaging as activists in local collectives, participating in occupations or place‐demonstrations. However, students in these mobility conditions are still seen as temporary city users and their engagement with local institutions and communities is understudied. Drawing on social representations and…

  • Negotiation Capacity in un Climate Negotiations: Compensating Delegation Size with Delegation Composition

    Carola Klöck, Paula Castro•ARTICLE•International Negotiation•2025

Despite the formal equality of all states, in practice, international negotiations are highly unequal. In particular, small delegation size limits countries’ capacity to meaningfully engage with complex global processes. Yet, delegation size is an insufficient indicator of negotiation capacity. We argue that we also need to pay attention to delegation composition. Indeed, we propose that small delegation size can be compensated by including non-g…

Open Access•Fátima Alves, Diogo Guedes Vidal et al.•ARTICLE•Hungarian Geographical Bulletin•2024

This paper reports a socio-economic characterization of the Portuguese kiwifruit sector. A survey was applied between 2019 and 2020 to a sample of 94 kiwifruit farmers (males 76%, females 24%). 72 percent of the participants declare that kiwi cultivation is a complementary occupation characterized by an intergenerational pattern (25.6%). Almost 70 percent of the orchards are under 5 ha, and 26.8 percent declare that their company does not have a …

  • Beyond Aosis: Small island states’ presence and participation at COP27

Carola Klöck, Paula Castro et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2024

Small islands are at the frontline of climate change – and of climate negotiations. Yet while the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) has allowed small islands to collectively become a key player in UN climate negotiations, a focus on the group level masks important inequalities within AOSIS. This paper hence goes beyond the level of AOSIS to understand the power and agency of small island states in the global climate regime. We are intereste…

  • How Does Polycentric Engagement Relate to Countries’ NDC Ambition and Mitigation Policy Effort

Paula Castro, Marlene Kammerer et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Politics•2024

Under the Paris Agreement, global climate governance has become decidedly more polycentric. However, it is still debated whether the turn toward greater polycentricity leads to more effectiveness in delivering public goods like climate change mitigation. This article argues that engagement in polycentric climate governance is linked to both more ambitious mitigation targets and stronger mitigation policy effort at the national level. Empirically,…

  • Engaging participatory mapping for co-management and spatial depiction of nature’s contributions to people in the Portuguese biosphere reserves

Open Access•Miguel Moreira, Luciana Frazão et al.•ARTICLE•Ecosystems and People•2024

UNESCO Biosphere Reserves (BRs) are pivotal for studying and fostering sustainable interactions between people and nature. In this study, a public participatory geographical information system (PPGIS) approach was employed targeting key stakeholders across the 12 Portuguese BRs, to map their place-based perception over Nature’s Contributions to People (NCP). Stakeholders actively mapped NCP within their BRs, highlighting Habitat creation and main…

  • Invasive plants and agri-food waste extracts as sustainable alternatives for the pre-emergence urban weed control in Portugal Central Region

Daniela Duarte, D A Vivas Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The continued use of synthetic herbicides to control weeds leads to environmental pollution and health issues. Consequently, chemical formulations have been increasingly banned. However, sustainable solutions are lacking in the market. Alternatively, valorisation of phytotoxic waste to reduce the herbicides use promotes sustainability, meeting circular economy. We aimed at assessing the herbicidal potential of aqueous extracts of waste from the m…

  • Lisbon's unsustainable tourism intensification: Contributions from social representations to understanding a depoliticised press discourse and its consequences

Enrica Boager, Paula Castro•ARTICLE•Journal of Sustainable Tourism•2022

Resistance to tourism intensification and its unsustainability has grown. However, decision-makers in many cities continue to present tourism and the political and legislative options supporting it as an inevitable and consensual path for economic growth, concealing competing choices, voices, and values. The media can follow, presenting the issue in a depoliticised way: i.e., by foregrounding undiscussed dominant discourses, leaving little space …

    Open Access•Paula Castro, Marlene Kammerer•ARTICLE•International Studies Quarterly•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 39

Differential treatment is a key norm in multilateral environmental agreements. Its main objective is to increase compliance and reduce the free-rider problem by apportioning the costs and benefits of implementation more equitably across the parties in an agreement. The question of how to differentiate those burdens is inextricably linked to national interests, and while in some instances differential treatment is well designed and facilitates coo…

  • From legal to normative: A combined social representations and sociocognitive approach to diagnosing cultural change triggered by new environmental laws

    Open Access•Raquel Bertoldo, Paula Castro•ARTICLE•Culture & Psychology•2019

Inconsistency between the expressed support for resource-conservation ideas and behaviours has emphasized the need to develop a better understanding of the psychosocial processes through which formal laws (reified universe) also become informal norms (consensual universe). Experimental paradigms of the sociocognitive approach to social norms are able to assess if cultural change fostered by the legal/reified universe has been incorporated by soci…

    Open Access•Paula Castro•ARTICLE•Transnational Environmental Law•2016•References: 20

Many multilateral environmental agreements have adopted differentiated rules for different countries, based on the recognition of the 'common but differentiated responsibilities' (CBDRs) of states. By establishing two rigid groups of countries with and without emissions reduction obligations, the intergovernmental climate regime represents the most extreme case of such differentiation. The regime has struggled to overcome this rigidity and the re…

This paper discusses the potential of the notions of reification and consensualization as developed by the theory of social representations as analytical tools for addressing the communication between the lay and scientific spheres. Social Representations Theory started by offering an over‐sharp distinction between the reified and the consensual universes of which science and common sense, respectively, were presented as paradigmatic. • Legal Innovation for Social Change: Exploring Change and Resistance to Different Types of Sustainability Laws

    Open Access•Paula Castro•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2012•Cited by: 20•References: 55

In this article I argue that a desirable future direction for political psychology would be to pay more attention to social‐psychological processes involved in the response to innovative laws, in particular those devised with sustainability and environmental protection aims. This involves taking into account the following premises: (1) innovation and change are not unitary phenomena; instead there are different types of innovation; (2) legal and …
