  • Avenues for Coexistence: How Perception of Costs and Benefits Shape Attitudes towards Wolves

    Open Access•Lino, João Carvalho et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2024•References: 28

Human dimensions play a pivotal role in wolf management and conservation. To offer an informed basis to improve Human-Wolf coexistence, we explore how socio-demographic factors, fear, knowledge, and perceptions of costs and benefits of wolf presence drive human attitudes in the southern area of the Douro River, Portugal, a region inhabited by a small and endangered wolf population. We interviewed 220 people (175 from the general public, 13 hunter…

  • Landscape and population drivers of ungulate-vehicle collisions in Portugal

Open Access•Rita Tinoco Torres, Paloma Linck et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2023

Ungulate-vehicle collisions (UVC) have been steadily increasing throughout Europe, posing a risk to human safety, representing an extra factor of animals death. Here, we used information of a 2-year roadkill (2019–2020) monitoring of wild ungulates (wild boar, red deer and roe deer) to assess the drivers that influence the likelihood of UVC in Portugal. Our results support the contention that the variables promoting the collisions varied markedly…

Open Access•Mónica Pires, Carlos Fonseca et al.•CHAPTER•Investigação Qualitativa em…•2021

Introduction Since the first reported case of Sars-Cov-2, studies show the negative impact on mental health, with high levels of fear, anxiety and depressive symptoms. In Portugal, the percentage of mental morbidity is high. Having low income, being young and female increases the risk of psychosocial vulnerability. Few studies address the subjective experience and adaptation processes in different pandemic stages; Objectives To access the psychol…

  • The Literature of Catastrophe: Nature, Disaster and Revolution in Latin America

    Carlos Fonseca•BOOK•The Literature of Catastrophe•2020

This book investigates how nature and history intertwined during the violent aftermath of the Spanish American Wars of Independence. Synthesizing intellectual history and readings of textual production, The Literature of Catastrophe reimagines the emergence of the modern Latin American nation-states beyond the scope of the harmonious "foundational fictions" that marked the emergence of the nation as an organic community. Through a study of the ph…

  • The Gut Microbiota of the Egyptian Mongoose as an Early Warning Indicator of Ecosystem Health in Portugal

Open Access•Mónica V Cunha, Teresa Albuquerque et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The Egyptian mongoose is a carnivore mammal species that in the last decades experienced a tremendous expansion in Iberia, particularly in Portugal, mainly due to its remarkable ecological plasticity in response to land-use changes. However, this species may have a disruptive role on native communities in areas where it has recently arrived due to predation and the potential introduction of novel pathogens. We report reference information on the …
