  • Comentário Ao Texto De Irene Stengs

    Open Access•Giovanna Capponi•ARTICLE•Debates do NER•2025

• The Mouldy Kola Nut who did not Want to Talk

    Open Access•Giovanna Capponi•ARTICLE•Studia Religiologica•2024•References: 6

In Afro-Brazilian Candomblé, the manipulation of substances and the preparation and consumption of food offerings are a means of communicating with the orixás, who are the main deities and energies of nature worshipped in the religion. Feeding the deities is part of the ordinary ritual and devotional practice that aims to increase and strengthen the relationship between visible and invisible beings. In certain cases, ritual offerings may also be …

    Giovanna Capponi•ARTICLE•Food Culture & Society•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This paper analyzes consumption practices and dumpster diving among squatting communities in London. By rejecting the cultural environment which endorses rules of production and distribution of goods, squatters choose to consume food that has already been expelled by the mainstream economic system. Appealing to recent scholarship in this field, the way in which food is transformed and recategorized compels us to rethink Lévi-Strauss’s culinary tr…

    Open Access•Giovanna Capponi•ARTICLE•Antropolítica - Revista…•2020•References: 5

This paper focuses on the relationship between food practices, preparation of Candomblé ritual offerings and performance of rituals in a transnational case study. My interest here is to consider two ethnographic accounts of Candomblé rituals in Italy and Brazil. I will analyze how Italian practitioners perceive different aspects of the preparation of ritual offerings and what values are at stake in the cooking and consumption of food and food off…
