  • Psycholinguistics: A Survey of Theory and Research Problems

John W Gardner, Charles Osgood et al.•BOOK•Psycholinguistics•2021•Cited by: 33

PROBLEMSphers and others who had always exhibited some interest in language developed a renewed concern for the field. But their various lines of approach to the problem of language were in some respects remarkably disparate. The descriptive linguists discussing phonemes, the communications engineers discussing binary digits, and the psychologist discussing linguistic responses seemed most of the time to be engaged in wholly separate conversations.…

  • Linguistic and Ethnographic Data Pertinent to the "Cage" Glyph of Dresden 36c

    Open Access•Floyd G Lounsbury, Michael D Coe•ARTICLE•Estudios de Cultura Maya•2012

Stretched across the botton third of pages 33-39 of the Dresden Codex is a display of the subdivisions of a tzolkin, spelled out in greater detail than is found in the usual compact and schematic manner of representation. It is of the 4x65 variety, rather than the 5x52. The 260-day period is divided into four equal divisions of 65 days each, unequal subdivisions. In this case there are five of these, of 9, 11, 20, 10, and 15 days length respectiv…

  • Some aspects of the Inka kinship system

    Open Access•Floyd G Lounsbury•CHAPTER•Anthropological History of Andean…•1986

Data on the meanings of Inka kinship terms during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries are found in the following sources: the Arte and the Vocabulario of Domingo de Santo Tomás, printed in Valladolid, both in the year 1560; the anonymous Arte de la lengua general (attributed to Juan Martinez Ormaechea), printed in Seville first in 1586 and again in 1603, and then in Lima in 1604 and 1614; the Arte and the Vocabulario of Diego Gonza…

  • Classic Maya Prediction of Solar Eclipses [and Comments and Reply]

    Harvey M Bricker, Victoria R Bricker et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1983•Cited by: 8

Work by earlier scholars has shown that the Dresden Codex contains a table of temporal intervals appropriate to the cyclic occurrence of solar eclipses. This paper demonstrates that if the Maya calendrical dates in the table are converted to the Gregorian calendar by using the so-called Modified Thompson 2 correlation constant, the table gives very accurate warnings of solar eclipses for the late-8th-century A.D. span to which it refers. During t…

  • Ethnographic Semantics: A Preliminary Survey [and Comments and Replies]

Benjamin N Colby, Olga Akhmanova et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1966•Cited by: 16

Ethnographic semantics is the description of semantic characteristics that are culturally revealing. In anthropology it has come to include a number of different types of analysis which have so far been used mostly in studies of kinship and folk science. These are contrast-level mapping, componential analysis, programmed specification, and various uses of semantic rules, notably reduction analysis. Contrast-level study is the mapping of native wo…

  • A Semantic Analysis of the Pawnee Kinship Usage

    Open Access•Floyd G Lounsbury•BOOK•Language•1956•Cited by: 58

This paper presents a formal semantic analysis of Pawnee kinship terminology, demonstrating how a seemingly complex and irregular system can be understood through a set of underlying rules and principles. Lounsbury utilizes componential analysis, a structuralist approach, to break down kinship terms into their constituent semantic features, such as generation, sex, and lineality. He argues that the Pawnee system, despite its surface variations, r…
