Women in Asia countries are often characterized by high participation but limited decision‐making in agricultural activities, despite their critical role in achieving the synergistic benefits of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). This study examines the association between women's intra‐household decision‐making regarding crop choice and household dietary div…

  • Succession revolution: Feminist movements and the birth of female heir in China, 1928-1930

    Chao Xie, Chao Fu•ARTICLE•Women s History Review•2024

This article sheds light on the efforts of intellectuals and women’s circles in the struggle for equal inheritance rights in modern China. By analyzing various social campaigns for women’s equal rights during this period, specifically in relation to daughters’ access to inheritance rights, this article explores the complexities and contradictions surrounding daughters’ inheritance rights in twentieth-century China. The argument put forth is that …

  • Livelihood Diversification and Residents’ Welfare: Evidence from Maasai Mara National Reserve

Open Access•Qi Sun, Chao Fu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The contradiction between environmental protection and livelihood development is becoming increasingly serious for most protected areas in developing countries. Livelihood diversification is an efficient way to increase household income to alleviate poverty related to environmental protection. However, its impacts on household welfare in protected areas have rarely been quantitatively explored. This article investigates the determinants of four l…

The growing contradiction between protection and livelihood is a common challenge for most protected areas in developing countries. Skill training is an important way to increase household income and alleviate the dilemma between conservation and development. However, its effects on household income around protected areas have rarely been explored. This paper aims to evaluate the effect of skill training on the income of households around four Bi…

  • The Distribution of DOM in the Wanggang River Flowing into the East China Sea

Open Access•Jie Ma, Dongyan Pei et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a central component in the biogeochemical cycles of marine and terrestrial carbon pools, and its structural features greatly impact the function and behavior of ecosystems. In this study, the Wanggang River, which is a seagoing river that passes through Yancheng City, was selected as the research object. Three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence spectral data and UV−visible spectral data were used for component identif…

  • A comprehensive framework for evaluating the impact of land use change and management on soil organic carbon stocks in global drylands

Open Access•Chao Fu, Zhi Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2021•References: 1

Drylands play major roles in the terrestrial carbon cycle and mitigation of climate change. Understanding the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks under land use change and management is essential for achieving soil C sequestration through land-based solutions for drylands. In this paper, we briefly reviewed the literature to evaluate the impact of land use change and management on dryland SOC stocks. While the site-level field measuremen…

  • Effects of protected areas on welfare of local households: The case of Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya

    Open Access•Dagne Mojo, Ayub M O Oduor et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2020

Protected areas are vital for biodiversity conservation although some have been criticized for not providing adequate socio‐economic benefits to local people. Yet, empirical studies on socio‐economic impacts of protected areas that control for confounding factors are rare. Here, we assessed the potential impacts of Maasai Mara National Reserve in south‐western Kenya on welfare (indicated by levels of income, consumption and assets) of, and povert…

  • Patterns of human-wildlife conflict and management implications in Kenya: A national perspective

Huaping Long, Dagne Mojo et al.•ARTICLE•Human Dimensions of Wildlife•2019

With the intention to augment better management of human-wildlife conflicts (HWC) in Kenya, we assessed a national HWC pattern using a decade-long (2005–2016) monitoring data series. The results demonstrate that out of 29,647 reported HWC cases, crop raiding was the most frequent type (73%) followed by livestock depredation (23%) and infrastructure damage (4%). Different crops, livestock and wildlife species involved in the conflicts were also id…

  • Structural Estimation of a Model of School Choices: The Boston Mechanism versus Its Alternatives

Caterina Calsamiglia, Chao Fu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2019•Cited by: 6

We model household choice of schools under the Boston mechanism (BM) and develop a new method, applicable to a broad class of mechanisms, to fully solve the choice problem even if it is infeasible via the traditional method. We estimate the joint distribution of household preferences and sophistication types, using administrative data from Barcelona. Counterfactual policy analyses show that a change from BM in Barcelona to the deferred-acceptance…

  • Equilibrium Tuition, Applications, Admissions, and Enrollment in the College Market

    Chao Fu•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 6

I develop and estimate a structural equilibrium model of the college market. Students, having heterogeneous abilities and preferences, make application decisions subject to uncertainty and application costs. Colleges, observing noisy measures of student ability, choose tuition and admissions policies to compete for better students. Tuition, applications, admissions, and enrollment are joint equilibrium outcomes. I estimate the model using the NLS…

  • Dynamic prediction of Chinese development based on the ecological footprint method

Moucheng Liu, Wenhua Li et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2010

Ecological footprint (EF), as a physical indicator to measure the extent of humanity's use of natural resources, is one of the most successful methods used to assess sustainable development. This paper calculated the per capita EF and biocapacity (BC) of China from 1949 to 2008 and the fluctuant cycles of per capita EF and BC, which were decomposed and assessed based on empirical mode decomposition and nonlinear dynamic prediction models. We prop…
