Focus versus Denial: A Pragma-linguistic Analysis of the Black Lives Matter and All Lives Matter Formulas
This article focuses on the force of the slogan “Black Lives Matter” (BLM) in the light of what came as a repudiation to it, All Lives Matter (ALM). Adopting a pragma-linguistic perspective, it evinces to what extent ALM is an act of (conscious or unconscious) misinterpretation. Indeed, the gap could not be wider between the illocutionary force of the slogan as intended by the BLM movement’s advocates (Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tome…
What pronouns do you use? The pronoun-sharing practice from an (im)politeness perspective
This article focuses on the recent pronoun-sharing practice (in bio signatures or interactions) and demonstrates the need to apprehend the trend within a pragmatic framework. Basing her analysis on a questionnaire and extracts from the web via SketchEngine, the author shows that the different evaluations of the phenomenon cover the whole spectrum from politeness to impoliteness theory. Pronoun sharers evince what she calls “inclusive politeness” …
The Pragmatics of Hypocrisy
As a first attempt to date, this book addresses the notion of hypocrisy from a pragmatic perspective and devises a comprehensive model of verbal hypocrisy. The studies included adopt emic and etic approaches in order to contribute jointly towards an understanding of what appears to be a ubiquitous and multifaceted phenomenon. Going beyond hypocrisy as a mere moral vice, this volume establishes its pragmatic space and confronts it with adjacent no…
TV Series and Research in Pragmatics: From the Discipline to the Object and Back: Humans (Channel 4, 2015-2018) as Case Study
Research in linguistics/pragmatics can be carried out using different methodologies. Clark and Bangerter (2004) for instance mention three ways that they refer to as “armchair”, “field” and “laboratory” research. These designations refer to the location where the linguist/pragmatician undertakes her research; the researcher can remain seated in her armchair and rely on her own intuitions, or move to the very location where data can be collected i…
‘Stylistics will never become boring’: An interview with Paul Simpson
Paul Simpson got his PhD from the University of Ulster in 1984 and took up a post at the University of Nottingham the same year. He has since worked at Queen’s University Belfast and Liverpool University, and is currently at the latter institution. He was editor of Language and Literature from 2004 to 2009 after having been assistant editor. In this interview he recalls the influences that got him into stylistics and how he came to find a place f…
The effects of manipulative rhetoric in Kevin Spacey’s “Let Me Be Frank” YouTube video
This article focuses on Kevin Spacey’s manipulative rhetoric in the YouTube video he posted on Christmas Eve in 2018 when he was facing a felony sexual assault charge in Nantucket District Court in USA. Drawing upon the notion of “double deixis” used for the second-person pronoun, this article questions the extent to which Spacey’s use of the first-person pronoun could be called “doubly deictic”. The findings show that Spacey’s strategic use of d…
The pragmatics of manipulation: Exploiting im/politeness theories
The pragmatics of personal pronouns
The ‘indisciplinarity’ of stylistics
This paper aims at showing why the stylistician can be construed as a prolific “impostor” in a most positive sense: pledged to no specific linguistic prophet, she can opt for different theoretical linguistic tools (in the sphere of pragmatics, critical discourse analysis, cognitive grammar, etc.) depending on her object of study and what her research question is. The liberty claimed by the stylistician explains why stylistics is the “undiscipline…
