Colloquy
The wealth of new source discoveries alongside an enormous growth in performing and recording of the music of Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745) over the last twenty years signals a pressing need for a critical edition of his complete works, including a thorough revision of the Zelenka-Werke-Verzeichnis (ZWV). The contributions to this colloquy consider principles around the composition of an editorial team, questions of methodology, cross-border col…
Zelenka and the Combinative Impulse
Commissioned in 1722 for the Holy Week services at the Dresden Hofkapelle, Zelenka’s Miserere in D minor (ZWV 56) demonstrates virtuosic handling of a wide range of contrapuntal techniques. Zelenka drew upon his deep knowledge of past musical traditions, honed through his earlier studies in Vienna with Fux and his circle, to provide individual sections of the Miserere with systematic explorations of freely imitative, canonic and fugal writing as …
New Light on the Mid-Fourteenth-CenturyChace
The recent discovery of two canons in the manuscript containing the famous Tournai Mass changes the history of canonic genres. This article situates the new Tournai canons within the surviving mid-fourteenth-century canonic repertoire from Francophone regions of Europe, especially canonicchacesin the Ivrea manuscript and the works of Machaut. To achieve this, we examine current theories of canonic techniques before setting out our own analytical …
Horizontal-Shifting Counterpoint and Parallel-Section Constructions in Contrapuncti 8 and 11 from J. S. Bach’s Art of Fugue
Contrapuncti 8 and 11 from Bach’s Art of Fugue demonstrate triple fugal writing in three and four parts respectively. Contrapunctus 11 employs the original and inverted forms of the three subjects used in Contrapunctus 8. This paper investigates specific contrapuntal techniques used by Bach to articulate the sectional designs of each contrapunctus and to identify combinations of particular structural importance across both works. The approach dra…

Managing the Poverty–CO2 Reductions Paradox
This article examines the “Poverty–CO2 (carbon dioxide) Reductions Paradox,” wherein reducing poverty through economic growth simultaneously increases CO2 emissions from increased production and consumption, at a time in history when CO2 emissions must be reduced to avoid climate change catastrophes. Paradox theory and integrative social contracts theory are applied to help understand the evolving behaviors of China, the world’s largest CO2 emitt…

Walking the Eco-Talk Movement
Management scholars can have a major impact on advancing environmental sustainability by focusing on their own home institutions. A “four-type” sustainability action model is presented to foster thinking about how professors can engage and empower students, faculty, and staff to be active environmental change agents on their own campuses and local community. Faculty can assign sustainability class projects, integrate sustainability throughout the…

The Transmission of Zarlino's Canonic theory in seventeenth-century organ chorale settings
While the importance of Gioseffo Zarlino’s treatise, Le istitutioni harmonkhe (1558, rev. 1573), and its influence on music theorists of the later sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is well documented, his position in relation to actual compositional practice of this period has not yet been fully investigated. This paper explores how Zarlino’s codification of counterpoint formed part of the training of certain later composers and how it is refle…

Denis Collin, Keynesianism against Neoliberalism : A Real Alternative ? Current political and economic debates seem to be dominated by the opposition between the free-market ideas which now prevail and their keynesian or neo-keynesian critics. In many ways, however, such an opposition is false and deflects attentions from a more proper focus upon property relations and the nature and principles of political power

Adam Smith’s Social Contract
Reply to La capra
In one not unsubstantial sense, LaCapra is correct to insist that I have misrepresented his book. I was too exclusively focused on the accuracy of the representation (not a Derridean word, I know), and insufficiently attentive to the tools of representation, and their implications for politics and the historiography of ideas. The author suggests his method as a possible alternative model for doing intellectual history. I am pleased that readers o…
