In one not unsubstantial sense, LaCapra is correct to insist that I have misrepresented his book. I was too exclusively focused on the accuracy of the representation (not a Derridean word, I know), and insufficiently attentive to the tools of representation, and their implications for politics and the historiography of ideas. The author suggests his method as a possible alternative model for doing intellectual history. I am pleased that readers of my review are now offered the author's own explanation of this fascinating ambition. On the issue of the vocabulary of confrontation and choice, however, I have no such regret
