Mitigating the Experience of Everyday Boredom
This study examined the relation between HEXACO personality traits and the experience of everyday boredom. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks concerning both boredom and personality, we particularly focused on the link and underlying mechanisms of conscientiousness and state boredom. Three studies-two daily diary studies and one experience sampling study-were conducted. Across the three studies, with 401 Chinese participants answering around …
Social class and prosociality
Two theoretical perspectives (i.e., the risk management perspective and the resource perspective) offer competing predictions that higher class individuals-relative to lower class individuals-tend to be less versus more prosocial, respectively. Different predictions can also be drawn from each perspective about how the class-prosociality association varies across sociocultural contexts. To date, each perspective has received mixed empirical suppo…
Does cultural difference impede the allocation of government procurement? Evidence from China
This study investigates the impact of cultural difference on the location allocation of government procurement in China from 2015 to 2021. We find that cultural distance significantly hinders inter‐regional government procurement, and the degree of impact has an upward trend. Mechanism analysis reveals that cultural distance affects the location allocation of government procurement through information communication and identity recognition betwee…
Culture, self, and politics
The tendency of individuals to either justify or challenge the existing social and political system has significant practical implications. This research integrates system justification theory with a cross‐cultural perspective to examine the impact and underlying mechanisms of interdependent self‐construal on system justification. Studies 1a (N = 201) and 1b (N = 205) demonstrated that interdependent self‐construal correlated with higher system j…

Childhood traumatic experiences and complex posttraumatic stress disorder in Chinese adolescents
Attachment is an important framework for understanding individuals' CPTSD symptoms following childhood traumatic experiences. Parents and educators should learn effective parenting styles that promote secure attachment, while researchers and clinical practitioners should further explore attachment-based trauma intervention approaches. Perception of helper's autonomous motivation increases recipient's prosocial behaviour intentions via feelings of gratitude
Four studies investigated the impact of a recipient's perception of a helper's motivation (autonomous vs. controlled) on the recipient's subsequent prosocial intentions, alongside testing a mediational mechanism. Study 1 employed a questionnaire method to assess the relationships between participants’ lay theories of helper's prosocial motivations (i.e., the degree of autonomy), their dispositional gratitude and their prosocial tendencies. Studie…
When and why does economic inequality predict prosocial behaviour? Examining the role of interpersonal trust among different targets
Previous research suggests that economic inequality has caused a wide range of negative societal impacts. However, little is known about how economic inequality influences prosocial behaviour as a socioecological environment determinant. In five studies ( N = 62,342), we examined whether economic inequality reduces prosocial behaviour by decreasing interpersonal trust and the moderation role of interpersonal targets. Studies 1, 2a, and 2b showed …
Reasons for the continued decline in fertility intentions
China's fertility rate continues to decline despite government fertility policies. This study aims to explore the micro-level causes of China's declining fertility rate by examining the impact of changes in Chinese work patterns in recent years, particularly the prevalence of overtime work, on fertility intentions. Using data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), this study examines the impact of overtime work on fertility intentions at bot…
Government regulatory policies for digital transformation in small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises
In recent years, digital transformation (DT) has become an inevitable choice for manufacturing enterprises to achieve sustainable development. As a large number of enterprise groups, small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (SMMEs) play an important role in the industrial development of China. However, due to insufficient resource investment, high transformation costs, lack of talents, and unclear transformation pathways, how the governme…

Longitudinal relations among Honesty-Humility, moral disengagement, and unethical behavior in adolescents
Honesty‐Humility and unethical behavior in adolescents
INTRODUCTION: Honesty-Humility represents the tendency to be fair, genuine, and cooperative in social interactions. Although previous evidence has demonstrated that Honesty-Humility is related to decreased unethical behavior, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship, especially among adolescents. Based on social cognitive theory and system justification theory, the present study aims to examine th…
Does risk perception motivate preventive behavior during a pandemic? A longitudinal study in the United States and China
Controlling the spread of an infectious disease depends critically on the general public's adoption of preventive measures. Theories of health behavior suggest that risk perceptions motivate preventive behavior. The supporting evidence for this causal link is, however, of questionable validity. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a rare opportunity to examine how risk perceptions, preventive behavior, and the link between them develop in a fast-changi…
Testing the Status-Legitimacy Hypothesis in China
The status-legitimacy hypothesis proposes that people with lower socioeconomic status (SES) are more likely to justify the social system than those with higher SES. However, empirical studies found inconsistent findings. In the present research, we argue that at least part of the confusion stems from the possibility that objective and subjective SES are differently related to system justification. On one hand, subjective SES is more related to st…
System Justification Enhances Life Satisfaction of High- and Low-Status People in China
Across three studies, we examine whether system justification enhances psychological well-being among members of both advantaged and disadvantaged groups. In addition, we test the novel hypothesis that perceived individual upward mobility explains this positive effect of system justification. We address these issues by focusing on system justification and life satisfaction among individuals with high and low social class in China, an understudied…
