  • Mental health of college sex workers

Open Access•Stacie Lefeavers, Abigail H Conley et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

This study explored the impact of developmental and recent traumas on PTSD, anxiety, and depression among a sample of university students ( N = 410), including students who engaged in sex work during college. Using linear and hierarchical regressions, the study examined whether gender-based violence and potentially exploitative activities in college, specifically sexual assault (SA), sex work, sex trafficking, and intimate partner violence (IPV) …

  • Sleep Duration Polygenic Risk and Phenotype

Open Access•David W Sosnowski, Emily Smail et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2025

We sought to explore whether genetic risk for, and self-reported, short sleep are associated with biological aging and whether age and sex moderate these associations. Participants were a subset of individuals from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging who had complete data on self-reported sleep ( n = 567) or genotype ( n = 367). Outcomes included: Intrinsic Horvath age, Hannum age, PhenoAge, GrimAge, and DNAm-based estimates of plasminogen …

  • Environmental Support Moderates the association of Socioeconomic Distress and Delay Discounting across Adolescence

    Open Access•Julia W Felton, Jill A Rabinowitz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth and Adolescence•2024•References: 53

  • Longitudinal patterns of adversity from childhood to adolescence

    Open Access•Radhika S Raghunathan, Sara B Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2024•References: 4

Childhood adversity can have detrimental impacts on life course mental and physical health. Timing, nature, severity, and chronicity of adversity are thought to explain much of the variability in health and developmental outcomes among exposed individuals. The current study seeks to characterize heterogeneity in adverse experiences over time at the individual, family, and neighborhood domains in a cohort of predominantly Black children (85% Black…

  • Cultural Socialization and Civic Engagement Among Racially Diverse Students of Color

Open Access•Chelsea Derlan Williams, Mehak Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•Race and Social Problems•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 44

Understanding the factors that promote civic engagement among emerging adult college students is crucial, especially considering its association with positive youth development. The current study examined ethnic-racial identity (ERI) exploration, resolution, and affirmation as mediators of the relation between cultural socialization and civic engagement. Additionally, the extent to which students were raised in predominantly minoritized neighborh…

  • Financial stress as a mediator of the association between maternal childhood adversity and infant birth weight, gestational age, and Nicu admission

    Open Access•David W Sosnowski, Alejandra Ellison-Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Findings demonstrate one pathway linking maternal childhood adversity to a potentially preterm birth or shorter gestational age, in addition to low birth weight at delivery, and present an opportunity for targeted intervention to support expecting mothers who face financial stress

  • Covid-19-Induced Inequalities and Mental Health

Open Access•Kenneth F Johnson, Kristina B Hood et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2022

  • Risk, Protective, and Associated Factors of Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms and Campus Health Services Utilization Among Black Men on a College Campus

  • Expanding on Threat and Deprivation

    Open Access•David W Sosnowski, Darlynn M Rojo-Wissar et al.•ARTICLE•Emerging Adulthood•2022

Dimensional models of adversity, whereby experiences lie along dimensions of threat and deprivation, are increasingly popular; however, their empirical validation is limited. In a sample of emerging adults (N=1,662; M age =20.72; 53% female; 72% Black), we conducted exploratory factor analyses using adversities derived from items probing family relationships and a validated assessment of traumatic events. Resulting factors were used to test assoc…

  • Moderating Role of Healthcare Disruptions on Friend and Family Pandemic-Related Negative Life Events Predicting Latines’ Anxiety and Alcohol Use Over Time

Open Access•Oswaldo Moreno, Chelsea L Derlan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Mental…•2022

  • Adverse childhood experiences and comorbidity in a cohort of people who have injected drugs

    Open Access•David W Sosnowski, Kenneth A Feder et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Among people who have injected drugs, adverse childhood experiences were common and associated with increased occurrence of self-reported medical comorbidities. Findings highlight the persistent importance of adversity for physical health even in a population where all members have used drugs and there is a high burden of comorbidity

  • Coffee and energy drink use patterns in college freshmen

Open Access•Dace S Svikis, Pamela Dillon et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

The response pattern was ubiquitous, with ED + Co most likely, Co intermediate, and NoCE least likely to endorse a broad range of substance use, problem alcohol behaviors, and familial risk factors. The finding that the Co group differed from both the ED + Co and NoCE groups on 8 measures and from the NoCE group on one additional measure underscores the importance of looking at coffee in addition to EDs when considering associations between caffe…

  • The Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Child Telomere Length

    Open Access•David W Sosnowski, Wendy Kliewer et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2021

Childhood adversity is linked to shortened telomere length (TL), but behavioral indicators of telomere attrition remain unclear. This study examined the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and child TL, and if ACEs were indirectly associated with TL through children’s self-regulatory abilities (i.e., effortful control and self-control). Hypotheses were tested using national data from teachers, parents, and their children (N =…
