The Spillover (and Direct) Effects of Workplace Contact on Intergroup Attitudes
Can workplace contact with outgroup members affect attitudes towards that group? If so, can this spread to others within a social network? We randomly assigned Hindu job applicants in India either a Hindu or Muslim partner for training and placement in call center jobs. One year later, those applicants assigned Muslim partners expressed more positive attitudes towards Muslims, were more likely to say Muslims faced discrimination and had greater k…

Men and Pornography: Illusions, Delusions, and the Struggle for Intimacy in Patriarchy
The radical feminist critique of pornography remains the most compelling analysis of sexually explicit material available, yet it is routinely marginalized in the dominant culture and in feminist circles. Why? Patriarchy is woven deeply into our lives, and denial or avoidance of the pathology of patriarchy is common. But men should embrace, not reject, radical feminism, not only for the sake of women’s liberation but for our own. The power of arg…

Do Labor Market Opportunities Affect Young Women's Work and Family Decisions? Experimental Evidence from India
Do labor market opportunities for women affect marriage and fertility decisions? We provided three years of recruiting services to help young women in randomly selected rural Indian villages get jobs in the business process outsourcing industry. Because the industry was so new at the time of the study, there was almost no awareness of these jobs, allowing us in effect to exogenously increase women's labor force opportunities from the perspective …
The (Perceived) Returns to Education and the Demand for Schooling
Economists emphasize the link between market returns to education and investments in schooling. Though many studies estimate these returns with earnings data, it is the perceived returns that affect schooling decisions, and these perceptions may be inaccurate. Using survey data for eighth-grade boys in the Dominican Republic, we find that the perceived returns to secondary school are extremely low, despite high measured returns. Students at rando…
The Power of TV: Cable Television and Women's Status in India
Cable and satellite television have spread rapidly throughout the developing world. These media sources expose viewers to new information about the outside world and other ways of life, which may affect attitudes and behaviors. This paper explores the effect of the introduction of cable television on women's status in rural India. Using a three-year, individual-level panel data set, we find that the introduction of cable television is associated …

September 11 and the failures of American intellectuals
This essay critiques the main responses to 9/11 by US intellectuals and analyzes how these reactions reinforced a determined ignorance of the consequences of US economic, foreign, and military policy and a further depoliticization of the culture in general. As a class, faculty have the resources—material and intellectual—to make a serious contribution to progressive political and social change in the world. They need to start putting those resour…
Anticipating Artistic Behavior
The author applies David Galenson's work on the life cycles of modern artists to the study of the paintings of old masters, from about the early fifteenth to the late seventeenth centuries. Both the potential use of technical examination of paintings and the role of drawings for preconceiving compositions are explored as means for interpreting artistic behavior among pre-modern artists. Using a study of illustrations in texts to establish a list …
Homecoming: The Relevance of Radical Feminism for Gay Men
Sexual politics in the gay male world would be enhanced by a serious engagement with radical feminist politics, particularly critiques of pornography and the sex industry. As the domination/subordination dynamic at the heart of patriarchy damages homosexual men, such engagement is crucial to the future of a gay movement
Early female marriage in the developing world
Many women in the developing world are subject to marriage at an early age. Most such women have little choice in the age at which they marry, or whom they marry. In this article, we examine patterns and trends of early marriage in the developing world. The incidence varies widely, from a high of 70 per cent in south Asia to a low of 30 per cent in South East Asia. Women who marry young tend to have less education and begin childrearing earlier, …
Patriotism's a Bad Idea at a Dangerous Time
In one of their “Campaign for Freedom” public-service television advertisements created after 9/11, the non-profit Ad Council captured the mood of a sizable segment of the American population. The ad begins with a shot of a row of average houses. In somber tones, the voiceover comes on: “On September 11, terrorists tried to change America forever.” The shot fades into a new picture of the same street, this time with U.S. flags flying from every h…

Patriarchal Sex
Four male undergraduates at Cornell University post on the internet the “Top 75 reasons why women (bitches) should not have freedom of speech.” Reason #20: “This is my dick. I'm gonna fuck you. No more stupid questions.”
Knowing Pornography
This essay draws on my personal experience with pornography to explore how sexually explicit material helps construct men's sexuality in contemporary U.S. culture. From this personal narrative, I show how pornography was an important means of sex education in my life; constructed women as objects, which encouraged me to see women in real life that way; created or reinforced desires for specific acts; shaped and constrained my sexual imagination w…
What are journalists for
What are journalists for? It's a question that has no definitive answer—certainly not one we can apply uniformly in all places at all times. But we should be asking the question and can, perhaps, provide some tentative answers for contemporary U.S. society. Journalists should have the same goal as all people: to balance their own needs for fulfillment with the collective project of making the world a more just, humane, sustainable place to live f…
Pornographic Lives
This article argues that narrative accounts are an important source of information about the connection between pornography and violence against women. The article reports on interviews with men about pornography use. When analyzed in conjunction with narrative accounts of women's experiences, these interviews support the feminist antipronography critique. The narratives show how pornography can (a) be a factor in shaping a male-dominant view of …
Pornography and Affirmative Conceptions of Freedom
Discussions of freedom of speech and press typically define freedom in the negative: freedom from control, regulation, censorship. The pornography debate typically focuses on whether intervention violates someone's freedom to produce, sell, or consume pornography. I argue that the negative definition is inadequate for theorizing freedom of expression and that affirmative notions are more promising. If pornography can curb some women's expressive …

In this book, leading experts evaluate the Soviet potential in major energy and industrial raw materials, giving special attention to implications for the world economy to the end of the twentieth century. The authors examine the mineral and forest resources that the Sovi…

Regionalization and Price Zonation in Soviet Agricultural Planning
In the Soviet system, the determination of what is to be produced where and in what quantity cannot be left to chance. Yet it is equally clear that complex activities such as agriculture cannot be planned in detail and supervised directly by the central authorities. Confronted with this dilemma, Soviet agricultural planners have attempted, through the process of regionalization, to develop a balanced framework for planning. But under the pressure…
