Hostile Campaign Rhetoric and Electoral Outcomes
Introduction This paper examines whether hostile campaign rhetoric‐specifically incivility and character attacks‐affects electoral outcomes in U.S. gubernatorial elections from 2010 to 2023. While such rhetoric may mobilize supporters or attract attention, it may also generate voter backlash in an era of increasing affective polarization. The study evaluates whether candidates benefit electorally from adopting more aggressive and uncivil campaign…
Is socially responsible capitalism truly polarizing
Objective We assess the hypothesis that socially responsible capitalism (SRC) is fundamentally partisan and primarily supported by people on the left, or whether this perception is another example of “false polarization”—overestimation of disagreement between the left and right. Methods We conduct two studies: (1) a survey of Americans' opinions on a general definition of SRC and five examples of recent prominent firm actions corresponding to dis…

New Light on Old Treasures
This article examines two aspects of the prolonged sojourn in Canada of Polish artistic and historical treasures from their arrival in 1940 until their repatriation in 1960–1961. Part One, “A Tale of Two Curators,” examines contrasting evaluations of the character and contributions of the two Wawel curators, Stanisław Świerz Zaleski and Józef Krzywda Polkowski, who took sharply different paths after the war. Part Two, “Quebec, the Church, and the…
Partisan News
I briefly summarize the economics literature on ideologically slanted political media (which I call, for short, partisan news), and discuss directions for future research. In the literature review, I take a history of thought approach, describing how theory and empirical work have fed off one another and real‐world events. I also note ways in which the work of economists differs from comparable work from other disciplines. In the discussion of fu…

The Cable Car at Kasprowy Wierch
The construction of a cable car in 1935 by Minister Aleksander Bobkowski halted the proclamation of a Polish National Park in the Tatra Mountains near Zakopane. A press and letter-writing campaign organized by Polish environmentalists, headed by Professor Wladyslaw Szafer and the Tatra Society, subsequently convinced the government to create a park. This debate also concerned the architectural aesthetics of the cable car buildings. The episode sh…

Ontology or Bureaucracy
In his book The Transparency of Evil, Jean Baudrillard claimed that the opportunity to understand something of the Holocaust had been missed – the time had been ripe in the immediate aftermath of the conflagration but no one took up the challenge. Now that the Holocaust, like every other event in our postmodern universe, has become a simulacrum of itself – known only through the various representations of it that circulate in the culture – it is …

The Giesche Company
The headline in the 15 August 1937 issue of the Great Falls Tribune proclaimed, "Montana Families Have Their Own Colony in Poland." This colony of eight American families constituted the upper management of the Giesche Mining Company of Katowice, Silesia. Owned by Americans since 1926, the Giesche Company was Poland's largest zinc mining company and one of Poland's largest coal producers. The newspaper article described the beautiful wooded site …

A Jewish Boyhood in Poland
A recollection of a Jewish childhood and the traditional way of life in a small Polish town before the Nazi invasion, as told by Salsitz to Skolnik. Kolbuszowa was a thriving town of 4,000 people before World War II; it is gone now, destroyed by the people themselves at the orders of the Nazis
The First (and Only) Year of the May 3 Constitution
Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, a young deputy elected to parliament in 1788, dashed off his political comedy, Deputy's Return for the 1790 Fall election campaign. The compromise nature of the May 3 constitution has often been obscured in Polish popular rhetoric since the constitution offered a valuable symbol for developing patriotic and democratic traditions throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century’s. Analysis of the May 3, 1791 Constitution oc…
Jews and the Urban Question in Late Eighteenth Century Poland
Two hundred years ago, the Polish government was preparing another biennial meeting of thesejm, their parliament, by organizing a confederation to raise troops to fight with Russia against the Turks. In a startling switch of political alignments, the opposition to King Stanistaw August Poniatowski seized control of the parliament, threw off the Russian alliance, and undertook a major governmental reform that culminated, after the reconciliation o…
