Leading Russia as the New Israel: Authorship and Authority in Fedor Glinka's Letters of a Russian Officer and Experiments in Sacred Verse
This article argues that Fedor Glinka (1786–1880) established a new model of authorship and authority during and after the Napoleonic wars. He achieved this by embedding two central controlling metaphors in Russian letters: first, that of Russia as a new Israel, and then, as a result, that of the writer as national prophet. The first stage of this process took place in his Letters of a Russian Officer (1815–16) and Letters to a Friend (1816–17). …
Rewriting the Bible: Fedor Glinka and his Long-suffering Job
The protracted struggle of Fedor Glinka (1786–1880) to publish his poetic imitation of the Book of Job (1859) reveals some of the tensions inherent in the relationship between literature, church and state during a period of critical change. Glinka was inspired by the desire of Protestant theologians such as Herder to refashion the Bible in a new, post-Enlightenment spirit. In Russia, where literary adaptations of the Bible were a highly contested…

The Validation of the Writer's Prophetic Status in the Russian Literary Tradition: From Pushkin and Iazykov Through Gogol to Dostoevsky
Al though it is widely recognized that the image of the writer as a prophetic figure has played an unusually prominent and persistent role in the development of the Russian literary tradition, this intriguing phenomenon has not received the close critical attention that it deserves.West European literary tradition provides a well-established context for the image, stretching from Homer and Virgil through Dante to Chenier, Blake, Byron, Hugo, Mick…
The Moral Dimension of the Prophetic Ideal: Pushkin and His Readers
In this article Pamela Davidson identifies a range of literary strategies that evolved in response to the disparity between the high standard of moral purity, which was a prerequisite for the Hebrew prophet, and the much laxer moral standards of Russian writers who adopted this role model. Strategies designed to reinforce the moral credentials of Aleksandr Pushkin, commonly regarded as the prototype of the poet-prophet, include the substitution o…
Demographics of dumping ii: A national environmental equity survey and the distribution of hazardous materials handlers
Using a national survey of facilities governed by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), we examine the sociospatial distribution of a much larger group of hazardous materials handlers than did previous environmental equity studies. Overall we find that RCRA-governed facilities are more likely to be sited in working-class neighborhoods with lower percentages of minority residents. We do not find evidence of stark environmental inequit…

The Poetic Imagination of Vyacheslav Ivanov. A Russian Symbolist's Perception of Dante
Vyacheslav Ivanov, poet, philosopher and critic, played a key role in the formation of the early twentieth-century Russian literature as leader of the religious branch of the Symbolist movement and his influence spread to Europe after his emigration to Italy in 1924. Pamela Davidson explores Ivanov's poetic method, relating his art to his central beliefs (in particular his interpretation of the ancient Greek religion of Dionysus and of the teachi…
