  • Bad Apples or Bad Orchards? An Organizational Analysis of Educator Cheating on Standardized Accountability Tests

    Open Access•Jacob Hibel, Daphne M Penn•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 18

Using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, we analyze quantitative administrative and survey data and qualitative archival data to examine the organizational character of standardized test cheating among educators in Georgia elementary schools. Applying a theoretical typology that identifies distinct forms of rule breaking in bureaucratic organizations, we find that teacher-focused, individual-level explanations for cheating are inadeq…

  • Latino Students and White Migration from School Districts, 1980-2010

    Matthew Hall, Jacob Hibel•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 43

We use three decades of data from U.S. school districts to assess the association between Latino school-age populations and net migration of non-Latino white residents. Our results indicate that growing Latino student populations are associated with declining net migration among whites. This pattern is particularly strong in non-traditional Latino districts, where the presence of Latinos is historically recent, in districts that are spatially pro…

    A Hu, Jacob Hibel•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 7

Drawing on a nationwide representative data from the Chinese General Social Survey 2010, this research examines the relationship between educational attainment and self-rated health in mainland China. It is shown that educational attainment can significantly promote an individual's self-rated health. Besides, the positive effect of educational attainment on self-rated health is stronger for males and rural residents. Finally, using mediation test…

  • Increasing heterogeneity in the economic returns to higher education in urban China

    Open Access•A Hu, Jacob Hibel•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 5

This study investigates individual heterogeneity in the economic returns to higher education in urban China following large-scale higher education expansion. We draw on data from the urban section of two waves of the Chinese General Social Survey, analyzing a sample of 1022 individuals in total who (1) were aged between 25 and 32; (2) completed high school education; and (3) were currently employed. Individual-level estimates of the distributions…

  • Delayed Special Education Placement for Learning Disabilities Among Children of Immigrants

    Jacob Hibel, A D Jasper et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2012

Prior theory and research suggest that children of immigrants would be at especially high risk for special education placement with learning disabilities. However, their longitudinal special education placement patterns have received scant attention. This study examines temporal patterns of special education placement among children of immigrants, focusing on the timing of special education placement for learning disabilities among first- or seco…

  • A Propensity Score Matching Analysis of the Effects of Special Education Services

Open Access•Paul L Morgan, Michelle L Frisco et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Special Education•2010

We sought to quantify the effectiveness of special education services as naturally delivered in U.S. schools. Specifically, we examined whether children receiving special education services displayed (a) greater reading or mathematics skills, (b) more frequent learning-related behaviors, or (c) less frequent externalizing or internalizing problem behaviors than closely matched peers not receiving such services. To do so, we used propensity score …

  • Who Is Placed into Special Education

    Open Access•Jacob Hibel, George Farkas et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•2010•Cited by: 60•References: 13

The authors use nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K) to identify variables measured in the fall of 1998 (when the sample's students were in kindergarten) that predict special education placement by the spring of 2004 (when most students were finishing fifth grade). Placement's strongest kindergarten predictor is a student's level of academic achievement. Also importan…

  • Roots of Assimilation: Generational Status Differentials in Ethnic Minority Children's School Readiness

    Open Access•Jacob Hibel•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Childhood Research•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This study examines the relationship between children's generational status and their cognitive and social school readiness, paying particular attention to racial/ethnic and national origin differences. This relationship is examined using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998—99 (ECLS-K). Results indicate that, while children of foreign-born mothers tend to have lower levels of school readiness than children…
