We don't show our women's breasts for nothing: Shifting purposes for Warlpiri women's public rituals - yawulyu - Central Australia, 1980s-2020s
Warlpiri women from the Tanami Desert of Central Australia have across generations passed on their yawulyu ceremonies, which nurture kin, country and cosmological connections. Dussart has previously shown distinct shifts in purpose in the 1990s, as Warlpiri women first began to perform yawulyu for non-Indigenous audiences. In the past decade, a further shift has occurred, with yawulyu being held predominantly as part of community-development arts…
Fora of Identity: From Public Ceremonies through Acrylic Painting to Evangelical Preaching
Thanks. Introduction This presentation has for aim to give you a glimpse, only a glimpse of manifestations of Aboriginality in a settlement in Central Australia where I have worked for the past 30 years. I address here in a truncated manner how what is now often called “indigeneity” become locally and globally rooted and routed through particular public performances. By examining various performances, which engage publically cross-cultural audien…
Canvassing identities: Reflecting on the acrylic movement in an Australian Aboriginal settlement
Two decades of Warlpiri acrylic art production in the Central Desert settlement of Yuendumu, which has provided an arena in which ever-changing and often contrary motivations and priorities have found expression between 1984 and 2004, are analysed. It is argued that a closer understanding of the changing nature of social identity is obtained by tracking the significance of practice
Christianity in Aboriginal Australia revisited: Christianity in Aboriginal Australia revisited
Despite the substantial Aboriginalist literature on Christianity, Aboriginal Australia has been largely peripheral to the emerging subfield ‘the anthropology of Christianity.’ In the introduction to this collection of essays, we argue that the reasons for its exclusion include Christianity’s late arrival, its limited fortune in the colonial encounter, and its continued marginal role in organising the values of Aboriginal life. However, it is prec…

Visual Representations of Aboriginal Australia
On September 29, 2004 Dolly Nampijinpa Daniels, a close friend and mentor, passed away at Yuendumu, Australia. Dolly always showed a keen interest in promoting Warlpiri culture beyond the confines of the settlement to other Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal groups. She wanted others to understand why kin relations, land, and the Dreaming are important to Aboriginal people. This issue is dedicated to her and her unfailing desires to teach and to learn
Shown but not Shared, Presented but not Proffered: Redefining Ritual Identity among Warlpiri Ritual Performers, 1990–2000
Little has been written on the construction and projection of indigenous social identity in public (‘non‐restricted’) ritual among Aboriginal Australians. Elsewhere, I have analysed nearly half a century of such public rituals (1946–1990) among the Warlpiri of Yuendumu in Central Australia, concentrating on the shifting forces of gender and kinship. This paper focuses on the key moments motivating senior Warlpiri women, since the 1990s, to reconf…

The Politics of Female Identity: Warlpiri Widows at Yuendumu
In an attempt to analyze how Australian Aboriginal women have reorganized their lives since sedentarization, I consider here how colonial and postcolonial political economies have affected the roles and status of an important segment of the population, mature widows. The anthropological discourse on remarriage2 and sustained widowhood, particularly in the work of Bell (1980, 1983), provides the stimulus for the present paper.3 Like Bell, I studie…

Notes on Warlpiri women's personal names
This article looks at Aboriginal personal names, an area of study neglected for over 40 years, and concentrate on an Aboriginal group in Central Australia. Personal names are considered to be linked to the Dreamtime, and the methods by which names are acquired, and the people involved in bestowing names, are discussed. It is argued that naming may be seen as a rite de passage. Usage of personal names, and the factors affecting such usage, are pre…
