Empirical imperatives in understanding self-related changes
Bluhm and Cabrera advance that Sadler’s ‘Archimedean point’ is an example of integration of sub-perspectives by an overall self, as such a self who may be reconciled and understood to be caused by DBS systems. Although this suggests great avenues to explore, we stress that the Archimedean viewpoint is strictly bound to a metaphorical domain. We argue that what is needed to help (prospective) DBS patients is not a metaphorical viewpoint, but a sci…

Existentialism: A Philosophical Inquiry
Existentialism asks some of the most fundamental questions about human existence: What gives our lives meaning and value? What is it to choose freely? How do I live an authentic life? How should I relate to myself and to others? In this book Joel Smith introduces and assesses the arguments and controversies surrounding these questions in an engaging way, providing a superb introduction to this important and perennial philosophical subject. Connec…
The Perceptual Present
Phenomenologically speaking, we perceive the present, recall the past, and anticipate the future. We offer an account of the temporal content of the perceptual present that distinguishes it from the recalled past and the anticipated future. We distinguish two views: the Token-Reflexive Account and the Minimal Account. We offer reasons to reject the Token-Reflexive Account, and defend the Minimal Account, according to which the temporal content of…
What is empathy for
The concept of empathy has received much attention from philosophers and also from both cognitive and social psychologists. It has, however, been given widely conflicting definitions, with some taking it primarily as an epistemological notion and others as a social one. Recently, empathy has been closely associated with the simulationist approach to social cognition and, as such, it might be thought that the concept’s utility stands or falls with…

The Phenomenology of Face‐to‐Face Mindreading
I defend a perceptual account of face‐to‐face mindreading. I begin by proposing a phenomenological constraint on our visual awareness of others' emotional expressions. I argue that to meet this constraint we require a distinction between the basic and non‐basic ways people, and other things, look. I offer and defend just such an account
P1-522 Clustering of health behaviours in Scotland: A comparison between east and West Scotland and between urban and rural regions
Introduction There is evidence that health behaviours cluster together in certain patterns and that this varies by individual and socio-demographic characteristics. This study took a different perspective by investigating whether the clustering of health behaviours varies geographically in Scotland. Methods Secondary, cross-sectional data from the Scottish Health Survey (2003) were analysed. The prevalence of meeting national recommendations on f…
Transcendental Philosophy and Naturalism
Kant's introduction of a distinctive form of philosophical investigation and proof, known as transcendental, inaugurated a new philosophical tradition. In this volume eight original essays assess the present state and contemporary relevance of this tradition and its relation to the naturalistic tendency in recent philosophy
Seeing Other People
Seeing Other PeopleWe get to know things in a number of different ways. For instance, among the things that I know are the following: that 4 2 = 16; that the grass in my garden is green; that it rained last night; that the rosebush in the garden is an Indian Summer; that right now my baby daughter is miserable. The ways in which I might have come to know each of these things is a matter contested, but most would agree that naïve consciousness chara…

Uncertain Guardians: The News Media as a Political Institution
The news media are often presumed to be a fourth estate, or fourth branch of government, serving as a check on the other three. In Uncertain Guardians, political scientist Bartholomew Sparrow argues that this is a mistaken notion. Instead, the media-print, radio, and television-affect policy making just as other political institutions do, whether the Congress, the electoral system, or public administration. The media decide what to report, when, …
Human insufficiency in Shinran and Kierkegaard
Shinran (1173–1263), the founder of the Jōdoshinshū of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism, and Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855), the Danish father of Christian existentialism, belong to very different eras, cultures, and religious traditions. Yet there are striking similarities between their religious philosophies, especially in how both offer theistic views emphasising faith and grace that see the person as radically insufficient to attain complete self‐t…
Diane Arbus to Alfred Stieglitz
Amid the voluminous correspondence of Stieglitz's later years are several exchanges between the photographer and young women visitors to his galleries, whom he frequendy drew into intimate conversations regarding their personal lives. Dorothy Norman has written regarding one of her first visits to the Intimate Gallery, in 1927, ‘Despite my youthful reserve, what he asked did not seem at all shocking. I wondered why no one else had ever inquired a…
How Stieglitz came to photograph cityscapes
Beginning in 1927, at the age of 63, Alfred Stieglitz began photographing the views of Manhattan outside the windows at the Intimate Gallery, his third-floor exhibition space on East 59th Street, and at the thirtieth-floor apartment at the Shelton Hotel, at 49th Street and Lexington Avenue, where he lived with Georgia O'Keeffe. In concerted bursts over the next four years, and then intermittently until ill-health forced the end of his picture-mak…

Toward An Integrative Measure of Health and Well-Being
Psychological and theological concepts of the integrative nature of healthy human personality are examined, with particular emphasis on the biblical relationships between integrated personality and shalom, or well-being. The Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) is suggested as a general indicator of personality integration and resultant well-being. A summary of reported research that has utilized the SWBS from 1982–1990 is presented and related to p…

Community satisfaction, expectations of moving, and migration
A previous residential mobility model (Speare, 1974) assumes an additive relationship between residential satisfaction, desire to move, and mobility. This paper elaborates the model and applies it to intercounty migration. An interaction between community satisfaction and expectations to migrate is hypothesized which distinguishes four groups of decision makers. A survey in Durham, North Carolina and a unique mobility followup over eight years pr…

Local Intimacy in a Middle-Sized City
This Study demonstrates that the residents of a middle-sized city generally establish and maintain intimate relationships with other urbanites. These intimate relationship are both locality-centered and spatially diffuse. While locality-centered intimacy is found in high socioeconomic areas, residents of low socioeconomic areas report that neighbors are their most frequent source of friends. This anomaly may be explained, in part, by the fact tha…
The Structure of Electoral Political Participation
Research on electoral political participation frequently combines voting and campaing activity into a single scale and adopts the Michigan social-psychological perspective on political behavior. Using Canadian data, we find that (1) voting and campaing activity are qualitatively different forms of activity that need to be examined separately, and (2) the Michigan model, with its emphasis on individual interests and beliefs as the primary determin…

Political Elite and Mass Perceptions of Party Locations in issue Space: Some Tests of Two Positions
Our analyses have enabled us to test several important theoretical propositions advanced by two outstanding scholars, Anthony Downs and Donald E. Stokes. Our data do not support the Downsian position that it is possible to array parties along a single left-right continuum. The factor analyses suggested that a left-right factor underlies the perceptions some individuals have of the positions Canadian parties take on some specific issues. However, …

The Party Official Next Door: Some Consequences of Friendship for Political Involvement
Consistent with renewed interest in using social phenomena to explain political orientations, we analyze the impact of a personal relationship with a party official on the political involvement of a group of citizens ("nigh-dwellers") in Winnipeg and Vancouver who reside near the party officials and are like them with respect to sex, age, and occupational status. The data indicate that the closer the relationship the greater the likelihood that (…

The Compatibility of Alternative Approaches to the Delimitation of Urban Sub-Areas
TOCATING the boundaries of urban subareas has been an emerging controver~-~sial issue among sociologists over the past decade. Before that time, traditional ecologists dominated the scene by presenting rather simple and direct means of isolating sub-areas or census tracts. More recently some urban sociologists have contended that the distribution of social phenomena may not be directly dependent on variations in land use, natural barriers, and ot…
