  • On the Interface of Influencers and Antagonists: Conceptualising the Role of Audience Antagonism in the Mediation of Reactionary Politics

    Open Access•Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•Media theory•2025

This article considers the constitutive role of audience antagonism in the mediation of reactionary politics. Reactionary political influencers are now instrumental in the cultivation of toxic online environments typified by the platforming of racist, misogynistic, and anti-LGBTQIA+ content. As institutional and regulatory frameworks increasingly seek to grapple with the platformised ecosystem within which these influencers operate, the focus of …

  • “Oh, You Mean… Gay?”: Relational Labour and the Industrial Articulation of Hegemonic Masculinity by Andrew Tate and His Followers

Open Access•Anthony Kelly, Anthony Patrick Kelly•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2025

This paper examines how the figures and imaginaries of hegemonic masculinity are co-produced and contested among a reactionary influencer fandom. It assumes an intersectional masculinities approach to the question of how Andrew Tate and his social media audience(s) articulate and mobilise anti-feminist and anti-LGBTQIA+ discourses online. Affective intermediation is proposed as a concept that situates relational labour within the influencer ecosy…

  • Representativeness and diversity within the teaching profession in England, 2010–2020

    Open Access•Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 2

The focus of this paper is the ethnic representativeness of the teaching profession in England. The novel methodology does more than simply count how many ethnicities exist, but also takes into account the relative size of the different ethnicities and tracks changes in the diversity of the teaching workforce compared to that of the general population over the ten years between the 2011 and 2021 census. It finds that while the teaching profession…

  • Recontextualising partisan outrage online: Analysing the public negotiation of Trump support among American conservatives in 2016

    Open Access•Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2023

This article conceptualises the role of audience agency in the performance of American conservative identities within a hybridised outrage media ecology. Audience agency has been under-theorised in the study of outrage media through an emphasis on outrage as a rhetorical strategy of commercial media institutions. Relatively little has been said about the outrage discourse of audiences. This coincides with a tendency to consider online political t…

    Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2023

The Research Excellence Framework is a high-stakes exercise used by the UK government to allocate billions of pounds of quality-related research (QR) funding and used by the media to rank universities and their departments in national league tables. The 2008, 2014 Times Higher Education (THE). 2014. (Paul Jump) “Check Your Coordinates.” Times Higher Education, December 18–31. Number 2183: 30–77. Literature suggests that cultural diversity can be an asset for organizations if managed effectively. This study employs a qualitative case-study design, drawn on data generated for a larger project that utilized 16 interviews, eight team meetings’ observations, document analysis and field notes. It instr…

  • Negative capital: A generalised definition and application to educational effectiveness and equity

James Hall, Alexandra Allan et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Review of Education•2021

The concept of capital has risen in prominence within educational policy and practice in the UK since Ofsted introduced cultural capital into its inspection processes in 2019. At the same time, fractured discourses exist across different types of capital – one of which concerns capitals that are negative in constitution and/or impact. This paper addresses both through: A systematic literature review of these negativities (in social, economic, and…

  • A tale of two algorithms: The appeal and repeal of calculated grades systems in England and Ireland in 2020

    Open Access•Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 2

The Covid pandemic and the cancellation of state examinations caused unprecedented turmoil in the education systems on both sides of the Irish Sea. As the policy of calculating grades using purpose‐built algorithms came undone in the face of a barrage of appeal, protest and legal action, the context in which the policies had been devised collapsed. The British and Irish governments had initially adopted similar approaches to issuing examination g…

  • The practice of choice-making: Applying Bourdieu to the field of international schooling

Open Access•Lina Khalil, Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in…•2020

This paper presents findings from a recent study on choice-making among teachers, school leaders and parents in a for-profit British international school in Kuwait. Using a Bourdieusian field analysis, the choice-making of the various stakeholders is investigated to reveal their positionality within the school’s social space, to examine the resources they hold and the capitals in which they are willing to invest. We find that choices made by, and…

  • Abnegation, accommodation and affirmation: Three discursive modes for the institutional construction of independence among national news agency executives in Europe

    Open Access•Terhi Rantanen, Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•Journalism•2020

The relationship between the ownership form of news agencies and their independence has long figured centrally in debates about the quality of news agency operations. Drawing on a discursive institutional framework, this article explores how national news agency executives in Europe perform a narrated role in the discursive construction of their organizations’ internal and external independence. We set out the concept of independence discourse, w…

  • A new composite measure of ethnic diversity: Investigating the controversy over minority ethnic recruitment at Oxford and Cambridge universities

    Open Access•Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Measuring ethnic diversity currently amounts simply to counting ethnicities. This makes it impossible to correlate with achievement, to track changes over time or to compare institutions in a meaningful way. It is not clear, for example, whether it is more diverse to have many ethnicities with a large majority in one or two categories, or to have fewer ethnicities with a larger proportion in each. This article is not about race per se, but develo…

  • Monopolising the examining board system in England: A theoretical perspective in support of reform

    Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•2014•References: 3

The fiascoes that seem to accompany the annual publication of examination results in England, the subsequent inquiries instituted to ensure they ‘never happen again’ and the Secretary of State’s decision, reversed six months later because of fears about possible EU legal challenges, to ‘end competition between exam boards’ raise some interesting issues about the way Examination Boards (or ‘Awarding Bodies’) operate in what is partly a competitive…

  • Measuring ‘equity’ and ‘equitability’ in school effectiveness research

    Open Access•Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 32

This paper introduces a Gini‐type index for measuring ‘attainment equity’ in schools; that is to say, how far a school (or group of schools) is from having a ‘fair’ proportion of its examination success attributable to a fair proportion of its student population. Using data from the National Pupil Database, the Index is applied to more than 20,000 students with matched attainment records at KS2 and KS4 in two ‘statistical‐neighbour’ local authori…

This paper is an attempt at coalescing and juxtaposing the respective arguments as they relate to schooling policy and practice in the UK. The growing international pressures of globalisation affect practitioners in unpredictable and different ways, so the development of national policy i…

  • The importance of materials R&D to the UK and the role of its National Physical Laboratory

    Anthony Kelly•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•2001

The importance of materials R&D to a modern economy, which arises because of the global competition between manufacturers and the essential maturity of all manufacturing industries, is illustrated with direct examples from the semiconductor industry. One result of this R&D is that the consumption of materials per capita decreases as the wealth per capita increases. The development of the materials work at the UK National Physical Laboratory since…
