English Church Polyphony
The theme of the essays in this volume is the identification of the resources which between c.1320 and 1642 the English church saw fit to provide for the performance of the music of its liturgy. Individual essays describe the music and the choirs of Canterbury and Lincoln Cathedrals, Winchester Cathedral Priory and the private chapel of Cardinal Wolsey, while the personnel of the chapels of Edward III, the Black Prince and John of Gaunt emerge fr…

The cultivation and promotion of music in the household and orbit of Thomas Wolsey
Liturgy and Music in the Role of the Chantry Priest
Within his home church, whether collegiate or parish, the primary role of the chantry chaplain was to be one of the team of executants of the plainsong liturgy. Collegiate churches were founded for the greater glory of God ; the soul of the founder drew benefit from his having procured an expansion of humanity's overall volume of worship, and in recognition of this the college's execution of the standard diocesan liturgy and its plainsong could e…
Claudio Monteverdi and Sacred Music in the Household of the Gonzaga Dukes of Mantua, 1590-1612
Upon the Gonzaga Dukes of Mantua (as on all laity) the canon law of the Catholic Church imposed an obligation to be present at Matins, Mass, and Vespers on every Sunday and (with First Vespers on the eve) on every major feast day. To facilitate their compliance Dukes Guglielmo and Vincenzo maintained among their household personnel an ecclesiastical staff (the cappella ) extending to a principal and four other chaplains, a Director of Music ( Mae…

The Chapel Royal, the First Edwardian Prayer Book, and Elizabeth's Settlement of Religion, 1559
Already at the beginning of her reign Elizabeth I was resolved to effect at the earliest opportunity both the restoration of the Royal Supremacy and the replacement of the Latin liturgy by an existing Edwardian Prayer Book. Constrained by Marian legislation which she was firmly minded not to break, the queen signalled her intentions by conspicuous adoption in her Chapel Royal of such few and minor manifestations of Protestant liturgy and practice…

To chorus from quartet
In respect of the choral music of the church services in England, the fifteenth century witnessed a revolution in performance practice which established fundamental premises that have endured to the present day. At a point around 1390, the opening of the period under review here, choral execution in the music of the Church was a feature of the performance only of plainsong. The rendering of polyphonic music was the province exclusively of small e…

The Musicians of the Lady Chapel of Winchester Cathedral Priory, 1402–1539
In any evaluation of the character and accomplishments of the English Reformation, an essential ingredient must be a sympathetic but, so far as possible, objective assessment of the nature – in all its strengths and weaknesses – of the unreformed Church and religion upon which the Reformation was wrought. Among the multifarious operations of the pre-Reformation Church, perhaps the most central to its fundamental purposes was the conduct by its cl…

Aristocratic and Popular Piety in the Patronage of Music in the Fifteenth-century Netherlands
It has always been recognized that during the fifteenth century the vigorous and affluent commercial towns of the Low Countries served as centres of artistic excellence, especially in respect of painting and of manuscript production and illumination. That the region was no less fertile a generator of practitioners and composers of music—especially of music for the Church—has also long been appreciated. If for present purposes the Low Countries be…

English in the World
The last few decades have seen phenomenal growth in the demand for English and marked improvement in language teaching procedures. Yet, a retrospective view of the development of our profession shows that the need to shape teaching programs to the social, economic, and cultural context of those who seek to learn English continues to be crucial. This article examines issues related to our understanding of what English is, of what language is and h…
Statistical dynamic models of social systems
This paper is devoted to the study of discontinuity and conflict in the behavior of social systems. The discussion is not ad hoc but relates to a basic mathematical theory of social behavior. Since two levels of analysis are possible and discontinuity and conflict at the macrolevel seem to be related to the existence of certain interactions at the micro level, one clearly needs a theory which connects these levels. A statistical dynamic theory is…
