Raewyn Connell’s Critique of “Intersectionality”: A Reconsideration
Since the publication of Raewyn Connell’s Masculinities in 1995, feminist scholars have extensively elaborated her notion of multiple masculinities with insights from intersectional feminism. While acknowledging the many points of resonance between these two important frameworks, this essay turns attention to Connell’s own reservation about the notion of “intersectionality.” Connell’s cautionary stance, I argue, can provide us useful guardrails f…
Rebuilding healthcare trust in China through AI-supported informed consent
Trust plays a central role in the doctor-patient relationship, and the informed consent mechanism is one of the primary mechanisms for building trust in the domain of healthcare. Yet, procedural formalism reduces the consent behavior to a requirement of mere formality. Despite limited medical knowledge, patients are often compelled to bear disproportionate responsibility for clinical decisions. Such formalization not only undermines the essence o…

Assessment of urban flood disaster responses and causal analysis at different temporal scales based on social media data and machine learning algorithms
With the widespread popularity of social media, leveraging this real-time data for flood disaster information acquisition and emergency management has become increasingly important. This study conducts a statistical analysis of urban flooding in Changsha from 2017 to 2024, utilizing social media data and machine learning algorithms. The findings indicate a temporal correlation between social media activity and rainfall, with a significant increas…
Determining the Factors Influencing College Students’ Intention to Use Mobile Health Applications: An Integrated SEM-ANN Approach
This study integrates the Technology Acceptance Model and Innovation Resistance Theory to deeply explore the key factors influencing college students’ intention to use mobile health applications. A random sample of 879 college students participated in a questionnaire survey, collecting self-reports on eight constructs: perceived value barriers, perceived complexity, perceived risk, resistance, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude…
Sports advertising and consumer intentions: Insights from the 2024 Paris Olympics
This study investigated the impact of viewing sports advertising content related to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics on consumers' intention to purchase sports goods and share information. Applying the theory of planned behavior, we analyzed how attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control influence these intentions. In August 2024, we conducted an online survey with 343 participants in South Korea, who had watched Olympics-related …

Gender Uptake: Theorizing the Semiotics of (Un)Doing Gender
Doing Gender" is often read as a theory of how people signify femininity/masculinity via expressive "performances." This prevailing interpretation falls short of what the theory calls for-an ethnomethodologically informed analysis of gender's emergent "naturalness." To further this agenda, I theorize the audience's "gender uptake" as a central component of doing gender by elaborating ethnomethodology's attention to interpretive acts. Integrating …
“I Didn’t Know Ace Was a Thing”: Bisexuality and pansexuality as identity pathways in asexual identity formation
Identity formation for asexual people can be complicated by limited societal awareness of asexualities. Consequently, people who eventually identify on the asexuality spectrum often adopt other sexual identities in their early lives. In this paper, we extend sexual identity development theory by analyzing the identity trajectories of asexual-spectrum people who once identified as bisexual or pansexual. Quantitative data suggests that about half o…
How does developmental advising impact college students? Findings from medical students in China
This study contributes evidence on the impact of developmental advising using a national sample of students in the undergraduate clinical medicine program in China (n = 122,932). Using a combination of instrumental variable regression and structural equation modeling, the study explored beyond low-touch informative intervention and fully presented how developmental advising makes effects. A significantly positive advising effect on both academic …
The effect of timers and precommitments on handwashing: A randomised controlled trial in a kitchen laboratory
Many foodborne illness outbreaks originate in food service establishments. We tested two behavioural interventions designed to improve the duration and quality of handwashing. We ran a three-armed parallel trial in a laboratory kitchen, from 7 March to 27 May 2022. Participants were n = 195 workers who handle food. We randomly allocated participants to three groups: Timer – tap-mounted timer that counted seconds while participants washed their ha…

Gender uncoupled: Asexual people making sense of high school sex talk
Sociologists have documented sex talk as a crucial mechanism in the reproduction of heteronormativity in schools. In this highly sexualized context, how did asexual people make sense of sex talk? Drawing upon 21 retrospective interviews with asexual adults (between 18 and 31 years of age), I examined their accounts of sex talk in high school. Contrary to expectation, most of my respondents did not link sex talk to issues of masculinity/femininity…

The art worlds of gender performance: Cosplay, embodiment, and the collective accomplishment of gender
In recent years, cosplay has gained global visibility as a performing art in which fans dress up as fictional characters from anime, comics/manga, or games. Although scholars contend that cosplay exemplifies gender performativity and may even offer a new heuristic for understanding social interactions in general, they rarely examine how gender is performed in cosplay. Taking together the production of culture perspective and interactionist theori…
What's Hegemonic about Hegemonic Masculinity? Legitimation and Beyond
Raewyn Connell's theoretical concept of hegemonic masculinity has been profoundly influential in feminist sociology. Despite the rich literature inspired by her theory, conceptual ambiguities have compromised its full potential. In this article, I critique a pessimistic tendency in the interpretation and application of hegemonic masculinity, which focuses on its regressive role in reproducing/legitimating heteronormative patriarchy while overlook…
