Ovid was there, and with him were Catullus, Propertius and Tibullus: Catullus and the shaping of early Tudor love poetry
This essay suggests that Petrarch's canzoniere, rather than being an originator of a mode of literary erotics, is a reception and mediator of classical Latin love elegy. Taking its starting point from Catullus’ searing erotic poems written to and about Lesbia, it investigates the evidence for reading Catullus as a source for Renaissance literary love, and considers the ways in which Catullan erotics shape the poetics of love in early sixteenth-ce…

Teaching and Gender
The study of teachers and teaching has always been an important focus of sociology of education, but the analysis of links between teaching and gender has developed more recently. As Grant and Murray (1999) contend, K‐12 teaching and postsecondary teaching are two different occupations and thus relationships between gender and teaching differ at each level. Other researchers have studied gender as it affects pedagogy and curriculum at all levels …
Pathways to gender inequality in faculty pay: The Impact of institution, academic division, and rank
Penalties and premiums: The impact of gender, marriage, and parenthood on faculty salaries in science, engineering and mathematics (SEM) and non-SEM fields
The prevalence of gender wage gaps in academic work is well documented, but patterns of advantage or disadvantage linked to marital, motherhood, and fatherhood statuses have been less explored among college and university faculty. Drawing from a nationally representative sample of faculty in the US, we explore how the combined effects of marriage, children, and gender affect faculty salaries in science, engineering and mathematics (SEM) and non-S…
Women's disconnection from local labour markets: Real lives and policy failure
This paper is based on research amongst women living in England who are on the margins of the labour market. It analyses why current policy works so inadequately for this group of women, whose existence is often marked by poverty and social exclusion. It emphasizes the significance of the reality of women's lived experiences and the nature of local labour markets, and discusses how and why policy fails to respond to these. Women lack bespoke supp…

State Abortion and Nonmarital Birthrates in the Post-Welfare Reform Era: The Impact of Economic Incentives on Reproductive Behaviors of Teenage and Adult Women
The impact of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA , or welfare reform) on the economic circumstances of women and children has received substantial research attention, but provisions of the act that attempt to influence women's reproductive behaviors have been much less studied. Provisions of PRWORA encouraged states to intensify efforts to restrict access to abortion and to decrease rates of nonmar…
Race, Gender, and the Wage Gap: Comparing Faculty Salaries in Predominately White and Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Using the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, the authors compare the gender pay gap at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) with the gap at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Also, within the HBCU milieu, they examine how class of the institution has an impact on pay gaps. First, they find that HBCUs do seem to have a smaller gap but that pay for all faculty at HBCUs is lower than in PWIs. Second, the gap is onl…

English This article considers whether partnerships of key actors are useful vehicles for addressing women’s economic disadvantage at the level of the local economy. It underlines the importance of women’s prosperity within the economic regeneration agenda. First, and by using a case study example, the article outlines examples of practical projects that can be developed at a local level. Second, it argues for better data and an improved understa…

Marriage and Relationship Satisfaction of Physicians
Social science research and popular writings suggest that physicians' work places them at risk for dissatisfaction in marriage and personal relationships. Job demands, the service ethic associated with medicine, and medical communication styles that clash with those most effective in personal life all are identified as potential risks to physicians' satisfaction in personal-life relationships. Furthermore, job stresses associated with medical wor…

Is There An Association between Gender and Methods in Sociological Research
Feminist scholars have proposed that two types of links exist between research methods and gender. Female scholars have been thought to be more likely than males to choose qualitative methods because such methods are compatible with relational and emotional skills stereotypically associated with women. Qualitative approaches also have been thought to be especially appropriate for study of gender issues and women's experiences and to be an effecti…
The Feminist Critique and A Decade of Published Research in Sociology Journals
In the mid to early 1970s feminist writers raised four major criticisms about sociological research on women and expressed concern about the related issue of the discipline's treatment of women sociologists. Critics charged that sociological research underrepresented women as subjects, concentrated on research topics more central to men's than to women's lives, used concepts, paradigms, methods, and theories better portraying men's than women's l…

Ethnicity, Generation, and School Attainment of Asians, Hispanics, and Non-Hispanic Whites
Research on immigration and attainment in U.S. schools typically does not separate out generation of U.S. residence, a critical factor in attainment. This article explores immigrant generation effects (native, child of immigrant, immigrant) on schooling attained for Asians, Hispanics, and non-Hispanic whites, using Current Population Survey data. Previously unpublished cross-sectional data are presented. Regressions predicting school years comple…
Gender and Publishing in Sociology
As in other fields, scholarly publication in sociology is not only the key to career success but also the route by which feminist analyses and perspectives become known to others in the discipline. A growing literature has analyzed women's and men's rates of publication, but the gender politics of the prepublication production of research and gender differences in reputation building after publication remain underexplored. This report reviews the…

Conceptual Approaches to Studying Gender in Education
In the mid-1970s Goetz examined published work in educational anthropology and distinguished four conceptual approaches to gender and education. This article analyzes research in anthropology, education, feminist studies, psychology, and sociology appearing since Goetz's review. We find decreases in what Goetz termed "sex difference" studies, but increases in research on how gender relationships are created, maintained, and transformed through ed…

Development of Work and Family Commitments: A Study with Women and Men Medical Students
Women and men medical students' intended commitments to profession and family were explored at three times during their training. At the global level, women and men anticipated giving equal balance to family and profession in the future. At a more specific level, there were significant gender differences in planned commitments to profession and to family. Although all students anticipated giving more hours per week to professional roles, men anti…

Peer expectations about outstanding competencies of men and women medical students
Men and women enrolled in a combined premedical-medical school programme were asked as they began their clinical training to rate their anticipated competence on sixteen criteria relevant to medical practice. Competence dimensions tapped scientific/technical skills, dedication/commitment, and interpersonal skills. Students then were asked to nominate one classmate whom they expected might be'the best'in each area. Self-ratings revealed few differ…
Expected Rewards of Practice and Personal Life Priorities of Men and Women Medical Students
Men and women medical students choose different medical specialties. These different choice patterns are sometimes explained as results of varying personal and professional orientations of men and women. This study examines this explanation through log-linear analysis of questionnaire responses of 266 men and women who are recent medical school graduates. Women and men show greater similarities than differences in expected rewards from medical pr…
