Engaging with Nature in Times of Rapid Environmental Change
Increasingly rapid environmental changes since the middle of the 20th century pose a significant challenge for vulnerable human populations. North American Native people from the Northwest Coast, as many other indigenous populations around the globe, have conceived landscapes as sentient, and capable of responding to human action. The consequent “social responsibility” taken for landscape is explored in the context of vulnerability to rapid envir…
Precursors and Antecedents of the Anthropocene
There seem to be two sorts of debates about precursors and antecedents to the Anthropocene. One concerns the question whether the concept of the Anthropocene was captured by earlier terms, such as “noösphere” or “the Anthropozoic Era”. The other concerns whether the full-scale transformation of Earth systems was already, at least partially, triggered sometime prior to the 19th century Industrial Revolution. This paper takes a wider perspective, w…
Covid-19 and climate change in the times of the Anthropocene
The Covid-19 pandemic has undermined many of our everyday certainties to such an extent that we should expect significant changes in the functioning of our societies from here onward. Increasingly, it is hoped that in this process of transformation the challenges of climate change will be addressed even if, to date, they have been considered with much less urgency than the pandemic. Here it is proposed that, despite certain important differences,…

Rock Art and Human Dimensions of Climate Change
This paper first outlines the potential relevance of the arts, and particularly of prehistoric rock art, for understanding human responses to environmental changes, such as change and variability in climate. We continue by describing some reasons for choosing artworks as valuable research sources that may allow us some access to the mentalities or worldviews of their makers. We conclude by making some suggestions for future research strategies th…
Rock Art in the Context of Contemporary Art and Aesthetics
An approach to rock art based in aesthetics is proposed for. Objections to such an approach, stemming from archaeologists and anthropologists, are addressed and described in terms of their epistemological, methodological and ethical dimensions. Key objections are explained and answered by noting that they tend to base on an outdated conception of art that precedes 20th century developments. It is argued that, once the art historical viewpoint is …

Cultural Responses to Natural Changes such as Climate Change
Natural Beauty
RONALD Moore makes a strong case for a multilayered model of the aesthetics of natural beauty, taking his bearings from a rich theoretical context, both contemporary and ancient. His aim is to set out what makes for the difference between natural beauty and other beauty judgements while avoiding reductionist positions. Moore argues against views such as that when aesthetically judging natural things, we should exclusively rely either on categorie…

Reflections on Reclamation through Art
Industrial interventions in the landscape leave their imprint in a permanent way, but there remain options on how to deal with land even at that point in time. In this essay, three alternatives are considered: leaving such sites as they are, restoring them to a condition resembling their original state, or transforming them into artworks. The author focuses in particular on the third option in order to determine to what degree it is possible for …
Recognizing the Autonomy of Nature
"How do the ways in which we think about and describe nature shape the use and protection of the environment? Do our seemingly well-intentioned efforts in environmental conservation reflect a respect for nature or our desire to control nature's wildness? The contributors to this collection address these and other questions as they explore the theoretical and practical implications of a crucial aspect of environmental philosophy and policy - the a…
Sustainability, culture and ethics
In order to develop sustainable relationships with the natural environment it is necessary to focus on approaches that may yield workable models of sustainability. Here I sample a few approaches from Latin America that point toward a promising model of sustainability. I argue that these approaches share the idea that the natural environment is in very close interdependence with human beings and their communities. I also outline the beliefs and pr…

Mill and Comte on psychology
John Stuart Mill and Auguste Comte were important promoters of science but took opposite sides with respect to the possibility of a science of psychology. This difference between them is explained by noting Mill's phenomenalist and Comte's realist commitments, as well as their respective sociopolitical and pragmatic orientations. It is briefly noted that the options developed by Mill and Comte need not be considered exclusive of each other, and t…
