RONALD Moore makes a strong case for a multilayered model of the aesthetics of natural beauty, taking his bearings from a rich theoretical context, both contemporary and ancient. His aim is to set out what makes for the difference between natural beauty and other beauty judgements while avoiding reductionist positions. Moore argues against views such as that when aesthetically judging natural things, we should exclusively rely either on categories from the natural sciences or on the imagination. This turns out to be a significant challenge since it might seem that, once a narrow criterion for determining what constitutes natural beauty is eschewed, the gate is opened to altogether too much ‘freedom and unboundedness’ (as he claims Malcom Budd's model suffers from). In order to avoid this, Moore sets out a complex account of the dimensions of aesthetic regard that, together, are intended to give substance to the claim that judgements of natural beauty can be delimited in some reasonable way
