  • The Dramatic Rise of the New Society Journals in Economics

    Open Access•John C Ham, Julian Wright et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2025•References: 2

We produce updated rankings of economics journals based on established and new methodologies, and use these rankings to document the spectacular rise of the new society journals in economics. We show that, while several factors (editor reputations, editor experience, citations from parent journals and the number of articles published) help determine these journals’ impact factors, none help explain why the new journals outperform natural comparis…

  • Time, Power and War: The Politics of Modern Experience

    Open Access•Julian Wright•ARTICLE•Histoire Politique•2023

Reading recent work on temporality, on power and on war, this article considers in particular some important new reflections on time in modern historical experience. It draws out themes to do with the politics and management of time in modern societies and discusses some of the more important new insights on how history as a discipline might better engage with the emotional and subjective force of temporal experience. The experience of time is of…

  • Is social exposure to obesity associated with weight status misperception? Assessing Australians ability to identify overweight and obesity

    Open Access•Cynthia Opie, C A Opie et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Repondents were challenged to accurately perceive silhouettes corresponding to an obese BMI in themselves and others. Weight status misperception was more likely to exist among those with a BMI less than 18.5 or 30 or more (underweight BMI and obese BMI). Accuracy decreased as BMI increased. Respondents with a BMI in the obese category were significantly more likely to accurately self-perceive their weight status using silhouettes than medicalise…

  • Socialism and Political Identity: Eugène Fournière and Intellectual Militancy in the Third Republic

    Julian Wright•ARTICLE•French Historical Studies•2013•Cited by: 1

The French socialist movement developed out of an eclectic mixture of ideas and militant groupings in the late nineteenth century. As party unity developed, many theoretical positions were sidelined. The strand of thinking exemplified by the working-class journalist Eugène Fournière, an advanced form of economic federalism that drew on the writings of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, found it difficult to identify itself clearly in twentieth-century socia…

  • After the Affair: The Congres de la Jeunesse and Intellectual Reconciliation in 1900

    Julian Wright•ARTICLE•French History•2009

The Congrès de la Jeunesse of December 1900 was an audacious project in intellectual reconciliation following the Dreyfus Affair. Drawing together Dreyfusards and anti-Dreyfusards, poets and political activists, it attempted a double reconciliation, between different political factions and between the worlds of literature and politics. This study of the congress suggests new lines of reflection for a rereading of the intellectual battles of the t…

  • Les prefets de Gambetta

    Julian Wright•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2009

Meticulously researched and just as beautifully presented, this work represents one of Vincent Wright's last great projects: a compilation of detailed information about the 136 prefects of departments who were appointed by Léon Gambetta during the period of the ‘Government of National Defence’, from September 1870 to February 1871. The intrinsic interest of the project lies less in the need of the scholarly community to know about the family back…

  • Mobile Call Termination

    Open Access•Mark Armstrong, Julian Wright•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 18

We analyse charges levied by mobile telephone networks to deliver calls. We integrate two literatures: one analysing calls from the fixed network, where predicted unregulated termination charges are too high, and one analysing calls from rival mobile networks, where predicted charges are too low. In practice, however, networks adopt uniform charges for terminating both kinds of traffic, as do regulators. We show how incorporating wholesale arbitr…

  • Regionalism and the state in France and Prussia

Julian Wright, Christopher Clark•ARTICLE•European Review of History Revue…•2008•References: 4

Prussia and France have been associated with the absolutist expansion of monarchical authority and the evolution of a heavily centralised and interventionist state structure. Drawing on revisionist work in the two historiographies, this article explores the meanings of 'region' in both cases, with some surprising results. French regionalism has often been seen as fundamentally antagonistic to the pretensions of the centralising state. Yet the aut…

  • PCBs in the Eggs of Eurasian Kestrels Indicate Exposure to Local Pollution

    Giacomo Dell'Omo, Giacomo Dell’Omo et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2008

Fail-to-hatch kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) eggs collected at the end of the 1999 and 2005 breeding seasons from nest boxes in and around the city of Rome, Italy, were analyzed by gas chromatography with electron capture detection for their PCB content and for the presence of DDT derivatives and other organochlorines. Among the various PCBs, congeners 153 and 180 were detected in all the eggs and showed the highest concentrations. Eggs collected fr…

  • The State and the Left in modern France

    Julian Wright•ARTICLE•French History•2007

French historians have recently begun to pursue the history of left-wing politics in a manner which suggests that the Marxist frame of reference has begun to disappear, even in this field of history. The eminent historian and public intellectual Pierre Rosanvallon is leading the way in the field of political and intellectual history, through his sustained examination of the State and the ongoing debate about French democracy. The connection betwe…

  • La France de 1914 a 1940

    Julian Wright•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2007

The eminent historian who has written this extremely readable contribution to the well-known series Que sais-je? asks, in his closing lines, ‘could the mental, economic, social and political crisis, in which France had been struggling since the beginning of the 1930s, have led anywhere other than disaster?’ This contains the kernel of the historiographical problem that faces all students of the later Third Republic, whether they are writing gener…

  • Comprendre le XXe siecle francais

    Julian Wright•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2007

‘Thinking the French Revolution’ was François Furet's title for a collection of seminal articles that are still a benchmark, thirty years on, for those who want to reflect deeply about that crucial period of French history. The eminent French historian Jean-François Sirinelli now invites us, in this much larger volume of essays, to ‘understand’ the twentieth century as it has been experienced in France. In both cases, the essayist has, in choosin…

  • Social Reform, State Reform, and Aristide Briand's Moment of Hope in France, 1909-1910

    Julian Wright•ARTICLE•French Historical Studies•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The period of Aristide Briand's first ministry, from the summer of 1909 to the autumn of 1910, offers a very particular window on the politics and intellectual arguments of the Third Republic. Falling between a period of comparative stability, when the Radical governments of Emile Combes (1902-5) and Georges Clemenceau (1906-9) had dominated politics, and a period of greater confusion, from 1910 to 1914, Briand's first ministry coincided with a g…

  • The Regionalist Movement in France 1890-1914: Jean Charles-Brun and French Political Thought

    Julian Wright, N J G Wright•BOOK•The Regionalist Movement in…•2003

This is the first full academic study of the political thought of the French regionalist movement in the Belle Époque. The book examines the private papers of Jean Charles-Brun, founder of the Fédération Régionaliste Française and rethinks the conceptual basis of regionalism through his intellectual biography, showing that it penetrated the political debates of the period as a commonplace in Republican arguments about state reform in France. Desp…
