Meticulously researched and just as beautifully presented, this work represents one of Vincent Wright's last great projects: a compilation of detailed information about the 136 prefects of departments who were appointed by Léon Gambetta during the period of the ‘Government of National Defence’, from September 1870 to February 1871. The intrinsic interest of the project lies less in the need of the scholarly community to know about the family background of sometimes obscure individual administrators, whose importance as the linchpins of the early Republic can be counterbalanced by the often brief period of their tenure. What Vincent Wright perceived, as students of his many other prosopographical studies will know, was that the window opened onto French social, political and bureaucratic life by work of this nature can be very wide indeed, and can oblige us to continue to rethink our assumptions about the priorities of well-known political leaders (Gambetta) or those of the wider community of French administrators
