  • Sufficientarianism

Open Access•José Carlos R Alcantud, Marco Mariotti et al.•ARTICLE•Theoretical Economics•2022

Sufficientarianism is a prominent approach to distributive justice in political philosophy and in policy analyses. However, it is virtually absent from the formal normative economics literature. We analyze sufficientarianism axiomatically in the context of the allocation of 0–1 normalized well‐being in society. We present three characterizations of the core sufficientarian criterion, which counts the number of agents who attain a “good enough” le…

  • Mixture Choice Data

Valentino Dardanoni, Paola Manzini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2022•Citada por: 1

Mixture choice data consist of the joint distribution of choices of a group of agents from a collection of menus, comprising the implied stochastic choice function plus any cross-menu correlations. When agents are heterogeneous with respect to both preferences and other aspects of cognition, we show that these two determinants of behavior are identified simultaneously by suitable mixture choice data. We also demonstrate how this finding can be ex…

  • The Liberal Ethics of Non-Interference

    Open Access•Marco Mariotti, Roberto Veneziani•ARTICLE•British Journal of Political…•2020•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 24

This article analyses the liberal ethics of non-interference in social choice. It examines a liberal principle that captures non-interfering views of society and is inspired by John Stuart Mill’s conception of liberty. The principle expresses the idea that society should not penalize individuals after changes in their situation that do not affect others. The article highlights an impossibility for liberal approaches: every social decision rule th…

  • Stochastic Complementarity

Open Access•Paola Manzini, Marco Mariotti et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Referencias: 22

The Hicksian definition of complementarity and substitutability may not apply in contexts in which agents are not utility maximisers or where price or income vari- ations, whether implicit or explicit, are not available. We look for tools to identify complementarity and substitutability satisfying the following criteria: they are be- havioural (based only on observable choice data); model-free (valid whether the agent is rational or not); and the…

  • Opportunities as Chances

    Open Access•Marco Mariotti, Roberto Veneziani•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2018•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 34

Opportunities in society are commonly interpreted as `chances of success'. Within this interpretation, should opportunities be equalised? We show that a liberal principle of justice and a limited principle of social rationality imply that opportunity profiles should be evaluated by means of a `Nash' criterion. The interpretation is new: the social objective should be to maximise the chance that everybody in society succeeds. In particular, the fa…

  • Competing for Attention

    Open Access•Paola Manzini, Marco Mariotti•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 19

There are many situations in which alternatives ranked by quality wish to be chosen and compete for the imperfect attention of a chooser by selecting their own salience. The chooser may be "tricked" into choosing more salient but inferior alternatives. We investigate when competitive forces ensure instead that (strictly) higher salience is diagnostic of (strictly) higher quality, and the most frequently chosen alternative is the best one. We prov…

  • On the impossibility of complete Non-Interference in Paretian social judgements

Marco Mariotti, Roberto Veneziani•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Theory•2013

  • CHAPTER 10 Choice over Time

Paola Manzini, Marco Mariotti•CHAPTER•The Oxford handbook of rational…•2009

This chapter reviews both the theoretical modeling and the experimental evidence, relating to choice over time. Most of the space is devoted to choices between outcome‐date pairs, which has been better studied, especially experimentally, but it also discusses choices between time sequences of outcomes. It distinguishes between “soft anomalies”, which can be accommodated by a simple modification of the standard exponential discounting model (e.g. …

  • Going Alone Together

    Open Access•Paola Manzini, Marco Mariotti•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2004•Referencias: 23

Several contractual situations are such that the parties may 'step out' of negotiations and take up outside opportunities only if there is mutual consent to do so. Examples include employer - employee negotiations, divorce and inheritance procedures, and arbitration. To analyse such cases we develop the general concept of a 'joint outside option' and study its effect in the standard bargaining game. Examples from the international trade and theor…
