  • Writing a Spiritual Biography in Early Modern France

    Jennifer Hillman•ARTICLE•French Historical Studies•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 41

In the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, four spiritual biographers wrote the “life” of the recently deceased lay dévote Madeleine de Lamoignon (1609–87). These authors sought to compose spiritual biographies—accounts of Madeleine's devotional life—all penned with the distant prospect of beatification or canonization in mind. This article analyzes these four retellings of Madeleine's life to excavate the process of writing vitae an…

  • Lay Female Devotional Lives in the Counter Reformation

    Jennifer Hillman•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2017

In 1563, the Catholic Church responded to the Protestant challenge to the religious life as the most holy feminine state with the maxim aut maritus aut murus (wife or wall). The navigation of that dictum by early modern women across Catholic Europe has arguably been one of the dominant themes in the scholarship over the last thirty years. Certainly, there had always been the opportunity for women to lead a religious life outside of marriage and t…

    Open Access•Jennifer Hillman•ARTICLE•AJIL Unbound•2017

World Trade Organization (WTO) members have, once again, been unable to agree on the appointment of new members to the Appellate Body (AB) in a timely fashion, as one member's term expired on June 30, 2017, another member resigned in August 2017, and a third member's term will expire in December 2017, with no consensus on a process to fill those posts. The 2017 standoff follows on the heels of a fractious debate during the summer of 2016 over the…

    Open Access•Jennifer Hillman•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•2017•References: 9

This article explores the connections between the translation of an early Christian relic to the Château de la Roche-Guyon in the mid-seventeenth century and the writing of local sacred histories by the priest and prior Nicolas Davanne. It finds that the translation of a finger bone of St Pientia was the culmination of efforts by a local scholar to revive the sacred history of the Vexin and to celebrate the regional liturgical traditions associat…

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects 1 in 68 children in the United States and has been associated with significant stress on nuclear families. Little is known about the grandparents of these children, however, including their first-person, intergenerational experience and potential family contributions. A national, online survey of 1,870 grandparents of grandchildren with ASD revealed that they make significant monetary contributions toward th…

  • Female Piety and the Catholic Reformation in France

Jennifer Hillman•BOOK•Female Piety and the Catholic…•2015

Hillman presents a fascinating account of the role that women played during the Catholic Reformation in France. She reconstructs the devotional practices of a network of powerful women showing how they reconciled Catholic piety with their roles as part of an aristocratic elite, challenging the view that the Catholic Reformation was a male concern.

  • Soul Mates and Collaborators

    Open Access•Jennifer Hillman•ARTICLE•History Compass•2015•References: 4

The 15th century is often regarded by scholars as a turning point in the history of spiritual direction, marking the beginning of a “Golden Age,” which lasted well into the 18th century. The “confessor‐spiritual director” emerged as one who fulfilled the role of spiritual counsellor as well as granting the forgiveness of sins after confession. Over the past two decades, historians have become increasingly interested in the dynamics of the relatio…

  • Appetite for Discovery

    Jennifer Hillman•ARTICLE•Historical Reflections/Réflexions…•2015•References: 2

Lucien Febvre’s 1941 call for historians to recover the histoire des sentiments is now routinely evoked by scholars in the wake of the recent “emotional turn” in the historical discipline. Historians would regain their “appetite for discovery” (goût à l’exploration) once they delved into the deepest recesses of the discipline, where history meets psychology, Febvre predicted. His plea followed the aims of a generation of scholars working in the e…

  • Characterizing the Longitudinal Relations Between Depressive and Menstrual Symptoms in Adolescent Girls

    Sarah J Beal, Lorah D Dorn et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2014

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between depressive and menstrual symptoms in adolescent girls in a 3-year longitudinal study. It was hypothesized that menstrual symptoms would increase in early adolescence and decrease in later adolescence, that girls with greater depressive symptoms would report greater menstrual symptoms, and that effects would persist after adjusting for general somatic complaints. METHODS: A community sample of…

  • Putting Faith to the Test

Jennifer Hillman•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval and Early…•2014

This article explores the cognitive struggle against “doubt” that impeded the conversion of the female aristocrat Anne de Gonzague, princesse Palatine, in seventeenth-century France. Anne's conversion came only after a life-long intellectual battle that climaxed when she held a fragment of the True Cross in the fire to test whether it could withstand the flames. The intellectual premise for her experiment with the holy relic can be found in her o…

  • Correspondence Between Gonadal Steroid Hormone Concentrations and Secondary Sexual Characteristics Assessed by Clinicians, Adolescents, and Parents

Open Access•Bin Huang, Jennifer Hillman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2012•References: 1

Adolescent sexual maturation is staged using Tanner criteria assessed by clinicians, parents, or adolescents. The physiology of sexual maturation is driven by gonadal hormones. We investigate Tanner stage progression as a function of increasing gonadal hormone concentration and compare performances of different raters. Fifty-six boys (mean age, 12.7±1.3 years) and 52 girls (mean age, 12.0±1.6 years) were seen at baseline, 6, and 12 months. Estrad…

This study examined the factor structure of the Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire (MSQ) in a sample of 210 adolescent girls (11-17 years). Such an examination has not been carried out with an adolescent sample. In addition, the definitions of menstrual disorders have evolved since the creation of the MSQ. Exploratory factor analysis supported a three factor structure indicating abdominal pain, negative affect/somatic complaints, and back pain. Part…

  • Knowledge and Attitudes About HIV/Aids Among Community-Living Older Women

    Jennifer Hillman•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2007

Although older women face unique risks related to HIV/ AIDS, little empirical data is available regarding HIV/AIDS among women over the age of 65. In the present study, 160 community-living older women and men completed questionnaires regarding knowledge and attitudes about HIV/AIDS. Findings showed that although older women were less likely to talk to their physician about HIV than men, they maintained greater knowledge and generally dispelled m…

Regardless of cultural group or participant sex, direct strategies were reported as first choice strategies, whereas indirect strategies…
