The validity of self-reported smoking: A review and meta-analysis
OBJECTIVES. The purpose of this study was to identify circumstances in which biochemical assessments of smoking produce systematically higher or lower estimates of smoking than self-reports. A secondary aim was to evaluate different statistical approaches to analyzing variation in validity estimates. METHODS. Literature searches and personal inquiries identified 26 published reports containing 51 comparisons between self-reported behavior and bio…
A case-control study of the effectiveness of bicycle safety helmets in preventing facial injury
In a case-control study we sought to assess the potential effectiveness of helmets in preventing facial injuries. Our study included 212 bicyclists with facial injuries and 319 controls with injuries to other body areas, who were treated in emergency rooms of five Seattle area hospitals over a one-year period. Using regression analyses to control for age, sex, education and income, accident severity, and cycling experience we found no definite ef…
Incidence of bicycle-related injuries in a defined population
Population-based incidence rates for head injuries and total injuries resulting from bicycle crashes were calculated in a Seattle, Washington health maintenance organization population. Overall rates were 163 per 100,000 for all injuries and 42/100,000 for head injuries. Individuals between 5 and 14 years of age are at highest risk for bicycle-related injuries. The data are presented for their potential utility in program planning
A Classification of the Vegetation of Boothia Peninsula and the Northern District of Keewatin, N.W.T
The vegetation of Boothia Peninsula and the northern District of Keewatin (212,500 km2) was surveyed, and a vegetation classification suitable for synoptic level surveys of wildlife habitat was produced. A total of 45 plant communities was recognized on Boothia Peninsula. Principal components and discriminant function analysis were used to identify seven significant groupings of these communities. These seven groups, designated as the vegetation …
Distribution and Numbers of the Kaminuriak Caribou Herd in March and April, 1977
The distribution and abundance of the Kaminuriak caribou herd were documented through an aerial survey conducted in March and April 1977. It appears that the herd altered its traditional migration patterns and abandoned its southern wintering grounds in this year at least. The size of the herd was estimated at 30,770 animals - a significant decrease from the 63,000 animals found in 1968. Available data, although limited, suggests that the maximum…
Career Patterns of Teachers in Negro Colleges
I N some respects the study on which this paper is based may be described as the first comprehensive analysis of the career patterns of teachers in colleges for Negroes. This is not to say that no previous inquiries have been made. The truth is, literature dealing with Negro colleges is fairly extensive, yet for the most part attention is focused upon the colleges as a unit, and only incidental consideration is given to the teacher as such
